Reliance Jio Fiber Plans, Tariffs, Pricing, Availability Announced: Comes With ‘Zero Latency Gaming’, 4K STB, And Disappointing FUP

After a long wait and lot of hype, Reliance Jio announced the much-awaited home and commercial launch of Jio Fiber (previously called Jio GigaFiber) wired broadband service. The Reliance Jio Fiber announcement includes plans, pricing, tariffs, availability, and other benefits like “Zero Latency Gaming”, Jio Home Gateway WiFi router, and Jio 4K Set Top Box (STB).

Reliance Jio Fiber, the highly anticipated high-speed wired home, and commercial broadband service was officially launched for the general public today, September 5, 2019. The Jio Fiber service was under trial deployment in a few Indian metros, but the company hadn’t charged the testers, and nor had it announced the tariffs, until today.

As promised recently, Reliance Jio Infocomm, the wholly-owned subsidiary of the Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Industries unveiled pricing and other introductory benefits of the Jio Fiber service. The promised speeds of the service, which deploys a dedicated fiber optic cable right up to the subscriber’s premises, are quite high. However, the company appears to have disappointed many with the highly restrictive Fair Usage Policy which curtails the amount of data that will be delivered at the promised speeds.

Reliance Jio Fiber Plans, Tariffs, Prices, Availability:

Reliance Jio Infocomm, the telecom arm of Reliance Industries, rolled out the commercial operations of its optical fiber-based fixed-line broadband service JioFiber. The tariffs for Jio Fiber start from Rs. 699 (approx. $10) and will go up to Rs 8,499 (approx. $120) per month. The minimum promised speed is 100Mbps, but the premium packs grant a much high speed of up to 1Gbps. The tariffs of Jio Fiber appear to be based on the FUP limits, with the entry-level plan getting just 100GB + 50 GB at the promised high speeds.

JioFiber users will have access to 3, 6 and 12-month plan. The company has also tied-up with banking institutions to offer attractive EMI schemes. This will allow customers to get the benefits of annual plans by paying monthly EMIs. Incidentally, all the extra data is limited to six months from the date of installation.

Subscribers will automatically get access complimentary access to several premium services like Zero-Latency Gaming, Device Security, Theater-like VR Experience, First Day First Show Movies, and Special Sports Events, Home Devices (Jio Home Gateway and Jio 4K Set Top Box), and many more.

Reliance Jio Fiber Added Introductory Benefits:

Jio Fiber wants to ensure adoption and migration of subscribers who are currently using services from several other competitive ISPs like Hathway, BSNL, ACT Fibernet, You Broadband, and many others. Hence with the inaugural offer, subscribers are entitled to get the following offers and services:

  • Ultra-high-speed broadband (up to 1 Gbps)
  • Free domestic voice calling, conferencing and international calling
  • TV video calling and conferencing
  • Entertainment OTT apps
  • Zero-Latency Gaming
  • Home Networking through the Jio Home Gateway
  • Device Security in association with Norton Antivirus
  • VR Experience In Premium Packs
  • Premium Content Platform

Although the company has promised a free 4K LED TV in its welcome offer, it hasn’t mentioned any details about the same. Installation of the service will follow a registration process. There are no installation charges for availing Jio Fiber. However, the company will charge a refundable Rs 2,500 for the internet router.

All the subscriptions to the service will include free access to Jio’s content apps like Jio TV and Jio Cinema. Incidentally, the much-hyped First Day First Show access is available from Rs. 2,499 (approx. $35) per month. This plan, and plans priced higher, will also include the premium VR headset.

Reliance Jio Fiber, Our Take:

Reliance Jio Fiber is targeting a total of 35 Million subscriber base. Surprisingly, the home and commercial wired high-speed fiber-optic broadband service have already received registrations from as many as 15 Million homes across 1,600 cities in India.

As mentioned above, the minimum promised speed is 100Mbps, and the premium packs grant a much higher speed of up to 1Gbps. However, while the promised speeds are substantially higher than competing services, Jio Fiber appears to have rather disappointing Fair Usage Policy (FUP) limits. Incidentally, none of the Jio Fiber plans have true unlimited FUP. After the monthly quota is exhausted, subscribers will be limited to speeds of just 1Mbps.

This is highly restrictive especially after considering the numerous data-intensive services that Jio Fiber will offer and support. With these FUP limits, majority of the subscribers will exhaust their monthly quota within a few days and will be forced to live with 1Mbps speeds or shell out more for the premium packs which cost substantially more.

While the Jio Fiber tariffs and plans are attractive, they seem to be curtailed in the FUP. To boost adoption and migration, Reliance Jio could have offered much more generous FUP limits that would allow subscribers to truly experience the power of high-speed fiber-optic wired home broadband connection without worrying about exhausting their monthly quotas.

Following the announcement, many ISPs have reportedly jacked up their prices and reduced their FUP limits. Needless to say, this does not bode well for the wired home broadband market. Still, with the pan-India fiber optic cable network of Reliance Jio, many Tier II, III and IV towns and even villages will now have access to high-speed wired internet with low latency.
