Report: Expected Release of Perfect Dark Reboot Still Years Away
In a recent report from IGN, it has been revealed that the reboot of the Perfect Dark franchise is still in its early stages of development. According to accounts from 13 individuals who have worked on the game across three different studios, it is estimated that the release is still 2-3 years away.
The Initiative, a first-party Xbox studio led by Darrell Gallagher, has been diligently working on Perfect Dark since its establishment in 2018. However, the development process has faced numerous setbacks and challenges, leading to an extended timeline. Despite this, recent plans indicate a potential episodic release for the game, although these plans may evolve as the project progresses.
Although the Perfect Dark reboot was officially announced in 2020, no substantial gameplay or details have been showcased to the public due to the aforementioned development hurdles. These setbacks include a challenging co-development partnership with Certain Affinity from 2019 to 2021 and a high level of staff turnover at The Initiative.
To rejuvenate the project, Xbox announced a partnership with Crystal Dynamics in September 2021. IGN’s sources suggest that the game was essentially restarted from scratch in Unreal 5 last year.
According to insiders, Perfect Dark will offer a narrative-focused first-person shooter experience, blending combat and espionage with the utilization of spy gadgets and innovative movement technology. While there is still a significant amount of work ahead, the game is reportedly moving in the right direction.
Matt Booty, Xbox Game Studios boss, expressed his confidence in the project’s progress. In a statement to IGN, he shared that he conducted a comprehensive review of Perfect Dark in May, acknowledging the challenges and hiccups faced along the way. Booty believes that The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics have now found their rhythm and are making notable strides in the development process.
While fans may have to wait patiently for the revival of the Perfect Dark franchise, it is clear that the dedicated teams behind the game are committed to delivering a thrilling and immersive experience.
