Red Dead Redemption 2 Attracted The Most Players After its Steam Launch

Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar’s highly-anticipated wild west shooter, first launched on PC as an Epic Games Store exclusive last October. Over a month later, the game finally made its way to Steam, where it received a “substantial boost” in digital sales.

As detailed in this report by SuperData, Red Dead Redemption 2’s biggest influx of players on PC was several weeks after its initial launch on the platform. In November, the game had racked up 406K in sales on the Epic Store, with the number surging to 1m by December. According to Steam Charts, the game peaked at just over 55k players, but that figure doesn’t include the Epic Store player base.

When Rockstar first announced the exclusivity deal, many fans were upset. Internet forums were filled with people voicing their hatred towards the Epic Store, with lots promising to hold off on purchasing and waiting for a Steam release. Avoiding the controversial store was only one reason for the low sales; many others simply wanted a bug-free release on Steam.

Whatever the case is, Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC was fifth on the list of top grossing titles of 2019. The first position on the list was taken by League of Legends, followed by Dungeon Fighter Online in second, and Crossfire in third.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare secured seventh place, which is expected due to the record-breaking launch of the game. In fact, the game was the most grossing title of 2019 on console, which makes up the majority of the playerbase. SuperData notes that the introduction of a battle pass in Modern Warfare attributed to a 4% increase in sales compared to the last Black Ops 4. Revenue earned from in-game purchases in December alone equaled $78.7m, which is almost what its predecessor made in its entire first quarter.

Other notable facts include Grand Theft Auto V having its best month in two years due to ongoing discounts. In addition, the recent Diamond Casino Heist update reportedly boosted Shark Card sales.
