Rainbow Six Siege’s Newest CGI Short is a Deeper Insight Into its Ever-Expanding Universe

The Six Invitational 2019 is now underway, and Ubisoft has treated Rainbow Six Siege fans with a 5-minute long CGI short. Premiered on the second day of the event, the “Hammer and the Scalpel” short gives us some much-needed understanding of the Rainbow Six Siege universe.

“Hacker specialist Dokkaebi from Korea collides with the stubborn veteran of the British SAS, Thatcher, in a clash of tactics,” reads the video description. “It’s up to Rainbow’s newest leader, Harry, to help settle the matter with a glimpse into Thatcher’s troubled past.”

The Hammer and the Scalpel

First-person shooter games, specifically those with an extensive competitive scene, normally don’t build up the story that much. With Rainbow Six Siege, however, Ubisoft has made it clear that the history of Rainbow is as important as the game itself.

The Hammer and the Scalpel CGI short elaborates upon the relationship of Thatcher and Dokkaebi. The introductory training scene portrays the two Rainbow operators as polar opposites. Furthermore, the short introduces Harry, who replaces Angela Bassett as Rainbow’s leader.

Additionally, the short also dives into Thatcher’s past, explaining in great detail the origins of his stubborn personality. With the help of a beautifully animated fight scene, Ubisoft goes to great lengths to show fans that Rainbow operators are more than just killing machines.

Nowadays, multiplayer games rarely focus on story-based content. Despite Rainbow Six Siege’s massive image as a competitive shooter, the game actually has a very interesting story. Players of the game who are familiar with the White Masks terrorist organization would know that it could make for an extremely interesting story expansion.

As is evident from the recent trailers, Rainbow Six Siege seems to headed in a different direction, likely in a better one. Ubisoft has always gone above and beyond when writing operator backgrounds. Judging from the feedback on the CGI short, story-based content is something Rainbow Six Siege fans can’t get enough of.
