PlayStation 5 With Detachable Disc Drive Coming in 2023, Sony VP Confirms

Hideaki Nishino, a senior vice president of platform experience at Sony, has hinted at potential PS5 hardware change in an interview. Our best guess is that it will be released or revealed close to the conclusion of the fiscal year 2023, which ends in September 2023. The new PS5 system with the removable hard drive, initially reported in September 2022 by well-known insider Tom Henderson, may very well be this change.

In an interview with Famitsu magazine, Nishino discussed his future ambitions for the PS5 platform after commenting that the PS4 Pro came out around three years after the PS4 did. He stated:

By the end of fiscal 2022, cumulative sales will exceed 37 million units, and we believe it will be a very important time for the platform. I won’t be able to talk about specifics at this time, but I hope you will look forward to next year (2023).”

Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming corroborated the prediction that Sony will introduce a new PS5 model shortly. Henderson claims that two sources have confirmed that the anticipated PS5 consoles have been sent for testing and they “work flawlessly.” Henderson remained opaque on the announcement date for the new PS5, though. CES 2023, which will take place in the near future, is one potential venue.

Rumors suggest that the next PS5, code-named “D chassis,” will include hardware that is comparable to that of already available models. The main distinction is the additional USB-C connector on the rear that will accommodate the removable disc drive. According to the sources, Sony intends to sell the new PS5 with the removable drive included. Gamers will  have the option of buying the console alone or the disc drive separately.

A further leak from November indicates that the “PS5 Slim” would be released in Q3 2023. It’s unclear if Sony will call this purportedly updated PS5 a “Slim” or “Pro” variant. However, it appears as though these bits of knowledge are pointing in the same direction.
