In most cases, the program will display advertising coupons and underlined keywords (a.k.a in-text ads), banners, and pop-up ads.

The most common locations where the proxycheck.exe server might reside are these two:

  • C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\AGData\bin\
  • C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\AGData\stuff\chr4E\

According to our investigations, the purpose of these ads is to make you install additional questionable applications such as browser toolbar, optimization utilities, and other products that operate in a gray area. Security experts argue that installing these tools might expose your system to security risks or might allow unknown entities to use your system resources to mine for cryptocurrencies.

  2. Once you’re inside the Programs and Files menu, scroll down through the list of installed applications and locate the AnonymizerGadget utility.
  3. When you see it, right-click on it and then click on Uninstall from the context menu that just appeared.

  5. At the next startup, see whether you still get a startup error related to proxycheck.exe, then open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and monitor your resource usage to see if a suspect process is still hogging up your system resources.

  3. After you clear the contents of the first location, navigate to the second location and clear the contents of chr4E folder also:

    Note: Keep in mind that USERNAME is just a placeholder and needs to be replaced with the name of the actual username that you’re currently using on your computer.

  4. Once both locations have been cleared, close File Explorer or My Computer and then press Windows key + R to open up a Run dialog box. Inside the run text box , type ‘regedit’ and press Enter to open up the Registry Editor utility.

    Note: When you’re prompted by the UAC (User Account Control), click Yes to grant administrative privileges.

  5. Inside the Registry Editor, use the menu at the top to click on Edit > Find.

  6. Inside Find window, start by checking the boxes associated with Keys, Values, and Data, then type ‘proxycheck’ inside the Find what box and press Find next.

  7. Next, right-click on every result that comes from the search you just did and click on Delete from the context menu. Do this until every registry key or value associated with proxyserver.exe is removed, then close the Registry Editor.
  8. Press Windows key + R to open up another Run dialog box. Inside the text box, type ‘temp’ and press Enter to open up the temp folder.

    Note: When prompted by the UAC (User Account Control) prompt, click Yes to grant admin access.

  9. Inside the temp folder, press Ctrl + A to select everything inside, then right-click on a selected item and choose Delete from the context menu to clear the contents of the temp folder.

    Note: This step will ensure that you don’t leave behind any leftover files that might still cause the same type of behavior.

  10. Finally, restart your computer and see if the issue is resolved at the next system startup.

Method 4: Performing a Clean Boot
