During today’s Pokemon Direct live stream, Nintendo revealed a lot of new information about the upcoming Pokemon games. Pokemon Sword and Shield, the eighth generation of Pokemon games, will release on November 15th, Nintendo confirmed today. The 15-minute long showcase gave us our first look at some of the new characters and creatures. In addition to the new content, Pokemon Sword and Shield will feature a brand new open-world “Wild Area”, the Dynamax game mechanic, and multiplayer Max Raid Battles.
The Wild Area is one of Pokemon Sword and Shield’s biggest additions. Essentially, it’s a large landscape between the main cities which the player will be able to freely explore. In this area, the player will have full control of the camera and can see roaming Pokemon like in Pokemon Let’s Go. Depending on the time of day and weather, you will see varying Pokemon in the wild area.
For Pokemon Sword and Shield, Nintendo is introducing a new battle mechanic called Dynamax. Pokemon from the Galar region are capable of growing in size, increasing the power of their moves. This ability can only be used once per battle, so you’ll need to think twice when battling other trainers who can use the same power. Dynamax Pokemon return to their original form after three turns, so you’ll need to learn to make the most of the ability.
Max Raid Battles
The multiplayer component of Pokemon Sword and Shield are the new Max Raid battles. Players can join hands with other trainers and take on wild Dynamax Pokemon, which will remain enlarged for the duration of the battle. Note that only one of the trainers can Dynamax their Pokemon, so these max raid battles won’t be easy.
As always, the new games will feature new Pokemon, characters, and legendaries. Alongside the new starters, Gen 8 brings five new Pokemon called Wooloo, Gossifleur and its evolved form Gossifleur, and Drednaw. Another flying type Pokemon named Corviknight acts as the game’s flying taxi, allowing the player to visit different towns and areas.
Pokemon Sword and Shield releases for the Nintendo Switch on November 15th. Check out the Pokemon Direct live stream for a detailed look at all the new Pokemon.
