PlayStation Gets Another New First-Party Studio After Recent Sony Acquisition

PlayStation Studios just announced the acquisition of Housemarque, the developers behind Returnal. This is not surprising as the Finland-based devs have worked very closely with PlayStation in the past, and most likely, Returnal’s success was enough to convince Sony.

Sony has somewhat slowed down on its studio acquisition, with Housemarque being the first purchase in 2021. Meanwhile, on the Xbox camp, Phil Spencer is still on a buying spree as Microsoft recently acquired Zenimax/Bethesda Softworks for $7.5 Billion US. After Microsoft’s Bethesda acquisition, all eyes were on Sony to announce something big. ‘Housemarque’ might not be a massive acquisition, but that is Sony’s principal formula, having select studios work on tailor-made games that define the PlayStation experience.

Finally, what this means for our fans? We at Housemarque are gamers, and we have grown from the need to perfect and tinker with facets of games that we have found most fascinating. We are also not known for shying away from running our own course and trying out new combinations. With the backing of SIE and its family of studios supporting us, we can truly grow into our place in the industry and show what Housemarque can create with no limitations. We can’t wait to show everyone what will be in store in the upcoming years, and we hope to usher in more lasting memories and exhilarating titles for the next quarter century and beyond.

Returnal is still one of the best-looking PS5 games yet, showing Housemarque’s technical capabilities as a studio. PlayStation fans certainly have a lot to look forward to from the team.
