PlayStation 4 Gets Extended Cross-play Starting With Fortnite

After a long period of isolation, PlayStation 4 has finally joined the cross-play party with Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. The Sony cross-play program takes off today with the launch of a cross-platform beta for Fortnite. This change could be partially attributed by the recent controversy regarding Fortnite cross-play on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.

Sony Interactive Entertainment President John Kodera shared the announcement today in a blog post. Kodera states that the decision was made following a “comprehensive evaluation process” and thanks the community for its patience.

Fortnite Cross-play Beta

Beginning with the biggest multi-platform battle royale on the planet, cross-play for Fortnite on PlayStation 4 is now possible. PlayStation 4 players can now engage in cross-platform play with Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac users. “We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.”

“Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players,” continues Kodera. “In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform.”

In the past, Sony has made its stance regarding cross-platform interaction very clear. Although unexpected, it has been a pleasant surprise to see this change come into effect. For now, Fortnite is the only title playable in the cross-play beta on the PlayStation 4.

“This represents a major policy change for SIE, and we are now in the planning process across the organization to support this change.”

The post concludes by saying that more details about this change will be shared in the future. Detailed information regarding beta timeframes and other cross-play titles will be revealed on the PlayStation Blog.
