Platform Named “Erebus” Shows Up In Unreal Engine 4 Code Might Hint At The PS5

Could Be The Codename For The PS5

The XBOX One and the PS4, both of them are in the end of their life cycles. The next generation of consoles are definitely in the works but we really shouldn’t expect them to drop before 2020. CD Projeckt Red, the devs of Cyberpunk did state that Cyberpunk 2077 would be on both generation of consoles, owing to its release date.

We really didn’t have any information on the next gen consoles, maybe because they were very early in development, but finally we might have something solid.

Supported platforms on UE4

A user named Gemüsepizza on the resetera forums found a line of code in the UE engine, which shows supported platforms. There was a entry for a new platform, “EREBUS”. There is a strong possibility that this might be the codename of the upcoming PS5. This line can be found in the following Path: C:\Program Files\Epic Games\UE_4.20\Engine\Plugins\Online\OnlineSubsystem\Source\Public\OnlineSubsystemNames.h

Crossplay check in UE4

Here you can see on line 496, the UE4 engine checks for Crossplay between platforms. Whats interesting is that the name “EREBUS” is being used with the PS4 and Xbox One.

PlayStation devices are known for using Greek names as their codenames. The PS4 when it came out in 2013 was codenamed Orbis. Even the name “EREBUS” is from Greek Mythology, also known as one of the first five beings in existence, born of Chaos.

Big publishers and developers often get early Dev kits for testing so this isn’t very surprising. Given the launch of the next gen console releases might not be too far, we might be seeing more information coming up in the next few months.
