After weeks of speculation, and even a slight delay in his release, Blizzard has finally unveiled Sigma. As per the usual Overwatch hero reveal trend, the developers released a short clip highlighting the grim background of this slightly mad scientist, check it out:
Sigma, also known as Hero 31, is an “eccentric astrophysicist who hopes to unlock the secrets of the universe”. The character’s entire theme seems to be centered around gravity. He also rambles about black holes and the possibility of “harnessing” the power of one. This doesn’t reveal the exact functionality of his abilities, but what we know for sure is his evil origins and ties to Talon.
Near the end of the teaser, Sigma is shown standing alongside Widowmaker, Sombra, and Moira. If you aren’t familiar with the Overwatch lore, these three characters, and apparently Sigma too, are members of the Talon terrorist organization. Judging from the clip, it’s pretty obvious that the mad scientist is a nefarious character.
The two-minute reveal didn’t actually show any gameplay of Sigma, but the video description might’ve given us a pretty good idea. Blizzard claims that the astrophysicist is “unaware he’s been turning into a living weapon”, which sounds quite interesting when you think about it.
-As there are frequent mentions of gravity and black holes, it won’t be too far-fetched to assume Sigma’s abilities revolve around those concepts. Since Zarya’s ultimate could also be described as a sort of black hole, I expect Blizzard will have taken a different approach with Sigma. The idea of an ability interacting with gravity makes me really excited, especially considering its synergy with other heroes.
In terms of uniqueness, Overwatch has always succeeded in keeping the fans’ interest with a variety of unique character abilities. Although Sigma’s intended release was delayed, it won’t be too long before we see the new hero on the Overwatch public test build.
