OPPO, Vivo & Xiaomi Announce a New Android File Transfer System to Rival Airdrop

iPhone users may boast about their Airdrop services. The mechanism works quite interestingly with the device using a mix of Bluetooth and Wifi service to exchange files in between devices. For the Android side of things though, nothing like this exists. Until now, perhaps.

According to a recent post by PhoneArena, some of the major manufacturers and players in the Android market are working on a service similar to Apple’s Airdrop. According to the post, the service is yet to be named. The companies involved are Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi. The companies announced that they would be working in an alliance. This would be done to form a new transfer service. The service would, like the Airdrop, use Wifi and Bluetooth to form a P2P (Peer-to-Peer) data transfer system.

How It would Work

While this is early news, the companies do explain how it would work. It would use Bluetooth to secure a connection with the supporting device. Then the Wifi, without disconnecting to the access point, establishes a P2P network to allow for a file transfer. The companies involved commented that the service would allow an unparalleled speed of up to 20 MB/s. This would certainly be a good competition for the Airdrop by Apple.

Talking about it coming to devices. According to the article, all the other companies by the main ones would be making use of this unnamed service as well. This would include Realme, OnePlus and Redmi. While Huawei and Samsung are still a big “if” regarding their involvement but that cannot be ruled out just yet. As for when we would see it. The article states that the first round of phones would be surfacing around February of this year. There would be more devices added to the list as well. This certainly seems bright for the Android file transfer system.
