OnePlus has been the budget flagship for quite some time now. Though, today that title does not do it justice. After all, the smartphone that started off below $500 now goes beyond 1 grand, for some configurations. Back when the OnePlus 2 came out though, OnePlus launched the OnePlus X. A budget option for the users where some corners were cut. Recent rumors told us about another budget OnePlus device given the current nature of their lineup. This would be the OnePlus Z. Everyone expected OnePlus to reveal the device along with the 8-series lineup but that was not the case.
In an article from gsmarena.com, a leakster commented that this does not mean that the project is shelved. According to the article, Max J (the leakster) says that the device may come out sometime in July. The OnePlus Z, although not officially confirmed by OnePlus, is set to be a toned-down version of the current flagships from the company. As the reports suggest, it would feature a MediaTek Dimensity 1000L SoC instead of one with Snapdragon. This would be 5G supported. This brings the question about its target market. With the chipset, it is somewhat fair to assume that the device would be aimed towards certain European markets and the Asian markets (like India).
The visuals of the Device were leaked a while back and Max J hints them too. It features a similar design to the current flagships with a punchhole camera instead of a notch. Even the back, from the renders, looks similar to the one from OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro.
Anyway, for now, we have to stick to the OnePlus Z name and the fact that it may (or may not) be coming out in July 2020. Will it be the next mid-range-topper? Perhaps we’d know in a few week’s time.
