NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER, First Super Turing GPU Without Ray-Tracing Launch Date, Price, Specifications And Availability Announced

NVIDIA will launch an interestingly placed GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER graphics card at the end of the current month. Although the GPU sports the SUPER label, it surprisingly lacks a key element that sets the sub-branding apart from the mainstream graphics card. Nonetheless, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER is certainly an appealing proposition for gamers and graphics professionals who need a powerful GPU but have a rather limited budget.

The upcoming NVIDIA GeForce GTX 16 Series GPU certainly shines in most aspects, and hence could certainly be an attractive buy. Moreover, the arrival of the new GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER could signal another development at the higher-end graphics card segment, which is currently dominated by the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU.

Confirmed Specifications of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER:

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER is the latest addition to the Turing based GeForce GTX 16 Series GPU family. It is a surprising fourth addition to a specially crafted series that focuses on the increasing mainstream market wherein most cards compete at under $300 price-point. The GeForce GTX 16 Series sits well under the GeForce RTX 20 series cards, which are also based on the Turing architecture. However, these are rather premium variants, costing way above the $300 bracket.

Interestingly, NVIDIA doesn’t have much competition from its main rival AMD in this segment. AMD is readying its new Radeon RX 5500 and Radeon RX 5500 XT graphics cards for desktops which are expected to launch next month. However, these cards would still be below the GeForce GTX 1660, most likely competing against the GeForce GTX 1650 series cards. The information is based on the pricing and performance metrics that AMD has revealed so far.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER GPU would sport 1408 CUDA cores, 80 Texture Mapping Units, and 48 raster operation units. Packing 6GB GDDR6, the clock speeds of the card would be maintained at 1530 MHz base and 1785 MHz boost. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER will reportedly have a rather high TDP of 120W.

As mentioned earlier, the card would receive a big upgrade in the form of GDDR6 which was missing on the existing GTX 1660. The onboard memory would feature 14 Gbps dies running across a 192-bit bus interface to deliver a total bandwidth of 336 GB/s. It is important to note that the bandwidth of GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER is even higher than that of GTX 1660 Ti (288 GB/s). It is the GDDR6 memory that’s responsible for the big boost, which is rated at 14 Gbps. The memory onboard the GTX 1660 Ti variant is rated at 12 Gbps.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER Pricing And Availability To Impact GTX 1660 Ti GPU?

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER is undeniably a capable mid-range GPU that could easily offer high-resolution gaming at ultra-settings without affecting gameplay, producing any artifacts or lag. The graphics card delivers a graphics score of 6578 points in the 3DMark Firestrike Extreme. This score comes very close to GTX 1660 Ti GPU.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER will launch on October 29th, which is about a week from today. What’s interesting is the price of the new NVIDIA mid-range GPU. The company has priced the GTX 1660 SUPER at $229. Interested gamers and enthusiasts will instantly notice that NVIDIA has added a mere $10 to the price of Non-SUPER GTX 1660. However, the SUPER variant is $50 less than the Ti variant of the GTX 1660.

Given the noticeable disparity between the prices and the closeness of specifications, it will be interesting to see how NVIDIA deals with the GTX 1660 Ti GPU. It is quite likely that NVIDIA may simply decide to end the production of the GTX 1660 and replace it with the SUPER variant. The company has followed the same path previously with most of the high-end RTX SUPER lineup.
