Fix: No Sound on YouTube

There’s no doubt that YouTube is the most widely known and used video platform on the internet. Almost each and every one of us use YouTube on daily basis. But, sometimes, you might face the no sound issue on YouTube. This issue will come out of the blue without any prior warning. You can face this issue even if you didn’t make any changes from your computer. The YouTube will work fine but there won’t be any sound for you even if your YouTube and computer volume is turned on.

The issue is mostly caused by the settings of the system’s sound. The settings get changed either intentionally or unintentionally. However, the issue can easily be solved by turning on the sound from the mixer settings. Sometimes, the issue might also be caused by the Adobe Flash Player as well. There are plenty of other things as well that might cause the no sound issue. But, you shouldn’t worry about it. Since there are plenty of things that can cause this, there are also a number of solutions available for it. So try each one of the methods listed and your problem will eventually be solved.

Make sure your YouTube video isn’t muted. Look at the speaker icon on the bottom left side of your YouTube player. If there is a line over the speaker icon then that means the sound is turned off.

Note: Sometimes the volume might be really low which won’t show a line over the speaker. Just over your mouse over the speaker icon and check its volume bar to see if the volume is really low or not.

Method 1: Check Browser Sound

Sometimes, the browser sound might be turned off from the system’s sound mixer settings. This can happen unintentionally or intentionally. You might have changed the settings or someone else might have turned off the volume of your browser. The good thing about this is that it can easily be solved by following a few steps.

  1. Right click the speaker icon on the right bottom corner of your screen.
  2. Select Open Volume Mixer

You will be able to see various different sound sections including your browser as well. Make sure the browser sound isn’t low or turned off. If it is, turn it back on and it should work fine then.

Method 2: Other Browsers

This is less of a solution then a check/workaround. Try checking the YouTube sound on other browsers to see if the sound works. If the sound is working on other browsers then that means there’s a problem on this browser. In this case, you should follow method 1 to make sure your browser’s sound is turned on. If that doesn’t help then uninstall your browser and reinstall it. Just follow the steps given below if you don’t know how to do it

  1. Hold Windows key and press R
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter

  1. Locate the browser and select it. Click Uninstall and follow any additional on-screen instructions

Now reinstall the browser and check if the problem is solved or not.

If the no sound issue is in other browsers as well then that means the sound issue is from your computer. This usually means that you need to update the drivers of your sound card and, if that doesn’t, check whether the sound card is working or not.

Follow the steps given below to update the sound drivers

  1. Hold Windows key and press R
  2. Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter

  1. Locate and double click Sound, video and game controller
  2. Select your sound card/device and right click it. Select Update Driver Software…

  1. Select Search automatically for updated driver software

If that doesn’t find anything then go to your sound card manufacturer’s website and look for the latest driver version. Download the latest driver from the website and keep it somewhere where you can find it easily later on. Once you find the latest drier version then follow the steps given below

  1. Follow steps from 1-3 above
  2. Double click your sound card/device
  3. Click the Driver tab

  1. Look at the driver version and check if it is the same as the latest version you downloaded from the manufacturer’s website. If it isn’t then close this sound card/device window (you should be back at the device manager screen)
  2. Locate and double click Sound, video and game controller
  3. Select your sound card/device and right click it. Select Update Driver Software…

  1. Select Browse my computer for driver software

  1. Click on Browse and navigate to the location where you downloaded the latest driver. Select the driver and click Open

  1. Click Next and follow any additional on-screen instructions

If the problem still isn’t solved then you need to uninstall the driver and let the windows install a generic set of sound drivers. This will most likely solve the problem since Windows install the most compatible drivers.

  1. Hold Windows key and press R
  2. Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter

  1. Locate and double click Sound, video and game controller
  2. Select your sound card/device and right click it. Select Uninstall and follow any additional on-screen instructions.

  1. Restart your computer

Once your computer is restarted, the Windows should have automatically installed a new generic driver for your sound card. This should solve the problem. If your sound still isn’t working then the problem might be with your sound card which you should get checked from an IT professional.

Method 3: Set your Playback Device

If nothing else worked then check whether your sound device is the default device or not. Follow the steps given below to check and make your sound device the default device.

  1. Right click the speaker icon on the right bottom corner of your screen.
  2. Select Playback devices

  1. Make sure that your device is the default device for sound. There should be a green circle with a tick in it with the default device. If your device isn’t the default device then select your device and click Set Default
  2. Click Ok

  1. Click the speaker icon on the right bottom corner of your screen and make sure that the volume is full

This should solve your problem. If the problem was caused by your device not being the default device for sound then the problem should be gone now.

Method 4: Flash Player Updates

A lot of users have complained about the issue being started after installing the latest Flash Player updates. The problem seems to be caused by the latest Flash Player update so uninstalling the updates solves the problem for a lot of users. Follow the steps given below if you recently installed the Flash Player updates (or even if you didn’t, follow the steps to check the update dates)

  1. Hold Windows key and press R
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter

  1. Click View installed updates

  1. Scroll down and locate the Flash Player updates. Check the dates of the updates. If you installed the update recently then try uninstalling the update and see if the problem is solved or not. Click the Flash Player update and click Uninstall

  1. Follow any additional on-screen instructions.

Once done, check if the sound is back. If the sound isn’t back then reboot and then check again.

Method 5: Clear History

If you know the time or at least the day when your sound stopped then this might work for you. Simply clearing the history and cache of your browser solved the problem for a lot of users. Simply clear your history to the point where the problem started and you should be good to go.

Since the shortcut for clearing the browser history is the same across, almost, all the main browsers, we will present the basic steps for clearing the browsing history. The exact names might vary depending on the browser you are using.

  1. Open your browser
  2. Press and hold CTRL, SHIFT and DELETE key simultaneously (CTRL + SHIFT + DELETE)
  3. Check the options Browsing History, Cache and Cookies. Select the time frame from the drop down menu. Try to select the time frame before the problem occurred.
  4. Select Clear Browsing data

Now, restart your browser and check if the problem is solved or not.

Method 6: Troubleshoot Sound Problems

Using the Windows built-in troubleshooter isn’t a bad option if none of the above methods worked for you. Windows own troubleshooter might solve your problem within a few minutes and it did for quite a few users who were experiencing this problem. So, it’s worth a shot.

  1. Hold Windows key and press R
  2. Type control.exe /name Microsoft.Troubleshooting and press enter

  1. Select Hardware and Sound

  1. Select Playing Audio (or Sound Playback). This option should be under the Sound section

  1. Click Next

Wait for the Windows to check and solve the issues with your sound. Windows will automatically solve the issue if it finds one. Wait for it to complete and follow any additional on-screen instructions. You should be good to go.
