Even MSI Calls Out NVIDIA’s High Pricing for the RTX 4080

No one is oblivious to the fact that GPU prices have sky-rocketed in one generation. The RTX 3080 cost $699 at launch but the RTX 4080 is priced at $1199, or a 71% increase. Similarly, the RX 7900 XTX, is an RTX 4080 competitor, which over the RX 6800 XT is 53% more expensive. In any case, even MSI had its say about NVIDIA’s pricing strategy.

MSI’s Response to NVIDIA

Over at Twitter, in a now-deleted Tweet, MSI openly stated that the RTX 4080 has a ‘bad price’. The tweet can be found here, although we have attached a screenshot we managed to obtain.

RTX 4080 Pricing | qualifiedoutcast

It seems quite weird that an official account from a major AIB has posted such a tweet. But then again, they do have a point. The choice of words could have been slightly better. The tweet makes sense as the price difference between the RTX 4080 and the RTX 4070 Ti is huge, standing at $400

In fact, the RTX 4070 Ti according to many reviewers, is not any better than the RTX 3090 Ti. It lags behind the Ampere king in ray tracing and is slower in most if not all games. NVIDIA showcased the performance of the 4080 12GB, depicting it as slower than the 3090 Ti. Then, they took a complete u-turn when their charts stated that the 4070 Ti is faster than the RTX 3090 Ti. Making matters worse, they again used the ‘up to 3x faster than the 3090 Ti‘ marketing jargon.

The main concern is the rise in GPU prices across all segments. If the MSRP for the high-end segment shoots through the roof then the same applies to the low-end market. Take the GTX 1050 and the RTX 3050 for example. The former cost just $109, whereas the latter costs a whopping $249. That is a 2.5x increase over two generations. Well, technically one, because Turing never had an RTX 2050

AMD could showcase Navi32 at Computex this year, with NVIDIA unveiling the RTX 4070 and the RTX 4060 Ti. The pricing at this point is completely unknown and will most likely go through various revisions during the production cycle of these GPUs.
