Microsoft Shares Vision Of ‘Modern OS’ Designed For Always On And Cloud-Connected Devices

Microsoft is eagerly looking forward to ever powerful computers and the Internet of Things (IoT) devices that are always on and cloud-connected. To ensure uninterrupted services that remain unhindered by updates, the company has outlined a few specific and highly needed features of the ‘Modern OS’.

Microsoft recently highlighted quite a few premium Windows 10 PCs at Computex. Alongside the hardware, the company also laid out its vision for the next generation of Operating System (OS) that would do away with some major pain-points of existing platforms, including those experienced in Windows 10. Microsoft categorically noted that future devices with advanced silicon will require a modern OS that will offer a set of platform features customers expect from their devices. The company further reiterated the need to offer features that deliver innovative people-centric experiences.

The most basic and prominent feature of the modern OS, according to Microsoft would be seamless and virtually invisible update process. According to the company the “update experience” should be deterministic, reliable, and instant with no interruptions.

Future devices would invariably be always on and consistently connected to the internet as well as to the cloud for accessing files and applications. The Microsoft modern OS would have some interesting arrangement for ensuring security. Microsoft plans to separate the operating system from the applications. This would ensure the applications operate in a defined perimeter, and as an extension, malicious attacks would have severely restricted scope.

Most devices today support multiple standards of communication, including Wi-Fi, 4G, Hotspot, etc. Microsoft plans to enhance the protocols to eliminate any potential connectivity dead spots. The company plans to achieve this by making devices aware of other devices in the vicinity and remain connected to each other.

Coming to the physical form-factor, quite a few modern laptops can offer the convenience of a tablet computer as well. Additionally, almost all modern devices come equipped with several sensors. Microsoft’s modern OS will have enhanced support for sensors and would offer better posture awareness. Essentially, the company appears to be keen on delivering multi-sensory operability through the use of pen, voice, touch, and even gaze in addition to the traditional keyboard and mouse combo.

Microsoft mentioned it was investing to realize the modern OS vision. This could indicate the company is actively looking for companies to procure. Apparently, Microsoft is already deep in development of some interesting features like Asian Inking platform, automatic photo tagging feature in Photos app, and new Your Phone capabilities.

Just yesterday, Dell Inc. one of Microsoft hardware partners accidentally revealed a new Windows 10 sub-variant called Windows 10 Home Ultra. It is quite likely that a modern OS could be part of the development.
