Mass Effect Legendary Edition Developer Outlines New Features

Bioware’s revamp to the Mass Effect trilogy was announced back in November with a release window for spring 2021. Following some leaks, Mass Effect Legendary Edition is now ready for launch on March 14th, 2021 for both Origin and Steam.

The Mass Effect Legendary Edition game page confirmed that the remakes will feature “super-sharp resolution, faster framerates, and beautiful visual enhancements”, but no specifics were revealed. With fans of the series thirsty for more information about the upcoming release, Bioware’s Mac Walters took to Twitter to share some of the changes and additions.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition will include updated textures, shaders, models, effects and technical features” and we now know exactly what that means. Both the console and PC versions of the game will have HDR support. Furthermore, Mass Effect 1’s core mechanics were retained but a lot of improvements were made to camera, input/controls, aiming, AI, cover, weapon-balance, squad control, boss encounters, Mako handling and aiming.

On the technical side of things, Mass Effect Legendary Edition will be available as a separate install and will not affect other Mass Effect installations. Responding to a detailed query about upgrades to sound effects, audio sampling and compression, Walters simply answers “yes to much of that.” While we don’t exactly know where the game exactly stands on this front, it’s clear that the trilogy has received improvements to audio.

Character compatibility was also brought up to which Walters replied that the studio is making it “as compatible as possible.” He further adds that due to “improvements and new options in character creator, some codes are currently working better than others.” Walters also notes that remakes of all three games can be played in any order thanks to the new launcher. Players will also be able to skip through the Genesis DLC and go right to playing the game. Unfortunately, the Pinnacle Station DLC for Mass Effect 1 and multiplayer mode of Mass Effect 3 will not be included in the Legendary Edition.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition launches March 14th for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC with forward compatibility and “targeted enhancements” for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.
