Huawei launches Nova 5, Nova 5 Pro, and Nova 5i with quad rear cameras and Android Pie

Finally, the wait is over as the Chinese tech giant Huawei took the stage in China to unveil new Nova 5 lineup phones. As expected the company launched three variants of Nova 5 series including Nova 5, Nova 5 Pro and mid-range Nova 5i. Apart from these smartphones, the company launched two variants of MediaPad M6 tablets and a number of accessories.

The standard Nova 5 and the Pro model features dewdrop notch at the top of the display. The chassis is made up of aluminum with 3D lighting glass covering the rear side. The edges are gently curved so that the device can be grabbed single-handed easily. The mid-range Nova 5i features a plastic body which is understandable considering the price tag. It comes with punch-hole at the top left corner. Apart from these models, the company also announced a special edition model of Nova 5 Pro exclusive for the Chinese market. It brings a slightly different design and will be shipped with Freelace Wireless headphones.

Kirin 810 SoC

With the new Nova 5, the company wraps off the cover from the second 7nm Kirin 810 chipset. The Kirin 810 SoC is one of its kind due to the dedicated Neural processing unit to better handle AI tasks. The Kirin 810 is launched as the successor of Kirin 710 SoC. It comes with dual cluster design, the performance cores comprise of dual Cortex-A76 cores with max clocking at 2.27Ghz whereas the day runner tasks will be catered by six Cortex-A55 cores with max clocking at 1.88Ghz. The Mali-G52 is on board as GPU.

Huawei Nova 5 and Nova 5 Pro

Both the Nova 5 and Nova 5 Pro are identical, the only difference is Chipset under the hood. Both feature a 6.39-inches OLED display with Full HD+ screen resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. The display aspect ratio is 19.5:9. Both have an under-glass optical fingerprint scanner. The Nova 5 is running on the latest Kirin 810 chipset whereas the Pro model is running on the flagship Kirin 980 SoC. Both the phones have 8GB RAM and storage up to 256GB. Both supports memory expansion via dedicated MicroSD card. The company’s own ERO filesystem is on board instead of EXT for enhanced performance.

As far as the cameras are a concern both have quad cameras setup on the rear side. The primary sensor on the rear is a 48MP lens with f/1.8 aperture. The secondary snapper is an ultra wide-angle 16MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture. The third sensor on the rear is a 2MP macro lens with f/2.4 aperture. The last sensor on the rear is a depth-sensing 2MP lens with f/2.4 aperture. Up front, the selfie snapper is 32MP with f/2.0 aperture. Both have dedicate night mode to capture detailed shots in low-light conditions.

A 3,500mAh battery cell is on board to keep the Nova 5 and Nova 5 Pro lights on. Both shipped with 40W fast charger straight out of the box. The Nova 5 Pro brings NFC support as well. For connectivity, both the phones have USB-C port. Both the phone’s dimensions are 157.4×74.8×7.33mm and weigh 171g.

Huawei Nova 5i

Thanks to punch-hole design the Nova 5i sports a slightly larger 6.4-inches LCD display with Full HD+ screen resolution. Under the hood, the Kirin 710 SoC is powering the phone. It will be available in two configurations with 6GB or 8GB RAM. The built-in storage is 128GB which is further expandable via MicroSD.

Like the expensive models, the Nova 5i also has quad rear cameras. The primary snapper is 24MP with f/1.8 aperture. The secondary sensor is an ultra wide-angle 8MP sensor. The third sensor on the rear is a 2MP macro lens with f/2.4 aperture. Last but not the least you will get 2MP depth-sensor with f/2.4 aperture. The front-facing selfie snapper is 24MP with f/2.0 aperture. The lights are kept on by a 4,000mAh battery cell. It has a traditional fingerprint scanner on the rear side. For connectivity, it also has USB-C port. The Nova 5i measurements are 159.1×75.9×8.3mm and weigh 178g.

Release and Price

The Nova 5 Pro will be available in two variants. The base model with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage will be available at 2,999 Yuan. The top-tier variant with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage will be slightly expensive at 3,399 Yuan. In terms of color options, the device will be available in Coral Orange, Midsummer purple, Bright Black and Forest Green colors. The special edition model is the most expensive amongst all at 3,799 Yuan.

The standard Nova 5 will be available in one variant only with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage at a price tag of 2,799 Yuan. The striking beautiful colors options are Forest Green, Bright Black, and Midsummer Purple.

The Nova 5i is cheapest amongst all, the base model with 6GB RAM starts at 1,999 Yuan. The 8GB RAM model will be costlier at 2,199 Yuan. It can be purchased in Blue, Magic Night Black and Honey Red colors. The Nova 5 Pro and Nova 5i are currently up for pre-orders in China with a release from June 28th. The Nova 5 will be up for pre-orders from July 13th with a release from July 20th.
