Huawei is all set up and they will be unveiling their next flagship smartphone, the Mate 20 Pro on 16th October. We have already seen quite a few leaks on the Mate 20 Pro, and we know it will be coming with the new Kirin 980.
Huawei will also launch the Freebuds 2 Pro wireless earbuds along with the Mate 20 series launch. Today we have more information on the Freebuds 2 Pro, along with leaked press renders coming in from Winfuture.
These earbuds follow the same design philosophy as the AirPods from Apple. The freedom buds are basically trying to bring the same functionality of the AirPods on the Android ecosystem. Many companies have tried to make similar headphones, based off the AirPods, but most of them are marred by issues.
The Freebuds 2 Pro come in a box, where they can be kept and also be charged at the same time. What’s interesting here is that the case also supports Qi charging, so it will work on wireless charging pads. Huawei’s marketing material shows the case drawing power, when kept on top of the Mate 20 Pro, which again can be a very useful feature if implemented properly.
The earbuds use Bluetooth 5.0 for wireless connectivity. This new standard has a lot of distinctive advantages, there’s low power draw, increased range and better bandwidth among other things. There’s also support for Hi-Res Wireless Audio, which allows bitrates of up to 560 Kbps. This might be a new implementation from Huawei, as many Snapdragon devices already use the Apt-X codec. Snapdragon’s implementation allows bitrates of upto 576 Kbps, so no distinct advantages here.
Finally coming to the battery, the headphone case takes 2 hours to charge when connected through a wire. Three hours if charged wirelessly. The headphones have a 3 hour playback time outside the case, although the case will keep them running for around 20 hours. Apple AirPods have a playback time of around 5 hours outside the case, and 24 hours of listening time if charged multiple times from the case, so clearly the AirPods are slightly superior, when it comes to general battery performance.
Freebuds 2 Pro supposedly have a few AI enabled features where they are able to distinguish between the users voice and other people. This might come in handy, when using Google Assistant in noisy environments. They weigh 4.1 grams each and are 43mm long and 18.6mm wide. Winfuture also stated that the expected price might be around 160$ US.
