Apple is one of the biggest names in the tech industry. With the company currently worth more than one trillion dollars, you can be sure that they have certain security protocols in place. While it is comparatively easier to gain access to an Android device, Apple has a different story. Apple as a company has always been very strict about its security policy. As a result, unverified third-party applications are not allowed.
Moreover, no Apple employee has access to your data, and only after device verification will the system allow a password change.
Using your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad
If you have the device with you and wish to reset your Apple ID password, the change takes little to no time. This is in the case that you merely wish to change your password and have not forgotten it. Although this solution can be tried from a Mac as well, the steps here are for handheld devices only.
- Go to Settings on the device.
- In the Settings app tap on [your name].
Settings App - Tap on Password & Security.
Password and Security - Check and see if the device is connected to iCloud.
- Afterward, press on Change Password.
Change Password - Next, if the device has passcode enabled, you will be asked to enter that passcode.
Enter Passcode - The device will prompt a new password.
Enter New Password - Sign-in using a new password to verify the change.
Use the Find My iPhone App
The above method will work only if you are connected to iCloud. However, you are not connected and have forgotten your password, the situation is a little different. You can bypass account recovery by resetting from a trusted device. Ask any friend or family member to download the Find My iPhone app. For this purpose, Apple Support App can be used. On the other hand, devices running on iOS 9 through 12 cannot use it.
- Open the Find My iPhone app.
Find My iPhone - When the Sign In screen appears, make sure the Apple ID field is empty. If you see someone else’s user name, erase it.
- However, if no sign-in screen is visible, you will have to Sign Out. Again, make sure the Apple ID field is empty.
- Tap Forgot Apple ID or Password, then follow the onscreen steps.
- Enter the device’s passcode.
Enter Passcode - Afterward, enter your new password and enter it again to verify it.
- The screen will display the following message.
Password Changed Successfully - Sign in to your account to verify password change.
Using any Web Browser
If any of the previous steps do not work, you may not be signed-in to iCloud on an eligible device. This method works for accounts that do not have two-factor authentication enabled. The solution works by either using the Apple ID email address or by asking security questions. For this method
- Go to iforgot.apple.com on any web browser and enter your Apple ID.
Enter Apple ID - Choose any one of the given two options i.e. either Recieve an Email or answer Security Questions.
Receive an E-mail or Answer Security Questions
If you choose to go with Option 1 (Recieve an Email),
- You will receive a password reset e-mail.
- Click on Reset now in the e-mail you receive.
Click on Reset Now - Enter and confirm a new password.
Enter and Confirm Password - Then, press Reset Password.
Reset Password - Sign in to iCloud to confirm the password change.
If you choose to go with Option 2 (Answer Security Questions),
- The user will be asked to verify their birthday.
Verify Your Birthday - You will have to answer a set of security questions.
Answer Security Questions - Enter and confirm a new password.
Enter and Confirm Password - Afterward, press Reset Password. Sign in to iCloud to confirm the password change.
