How to: Recover Deleted Files on a Mac

As with any other operating system, it could happen that you accidentally delete some files from your Mac. This can potentially be quite damaging if you mistakenly deleted something important.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, there are ways that you can follow to get your file back. even tough MacOS doesn’t have a native “undelete” tool, there are a few simple methods that you can use to retrieve deleted files on Mac computers.

Method 1: Restoring file by using the Undo Move command

If the last thing you did was to delete the file from the Finder menu, you can bring it straight back by using the Undo Move command. But keep in mind that in order to use it, the deletion needs to be the last thing you did in Finder.

To restore the deleted item, go to the ribbon at the top and choose Edit > Undo Move or use the shortcut Command + Z.

If this method wasn’t applicable, jump to Method 2.

Method 2: Restore it from the Trash

If you haven’t emptied your Trash since you mistakenly deleted the file, you can click on the Trash app icon (bottom-right corner) and right-click on the file that you mistakenly deleted. Then, choose Put back or drag it out from the Trash app to recover it.

If this method hasn’t helped you to restore your mistakenly deleted file, move down to Method 3.

Method 3: Restore deleted file using Time Machine

If you were careful enough to have set up the Time Machine Backup app prior to when you mistakenly deleted the file, the recovery process will be extremely easy.

Note: This method won’t be applicable if you didn’t set up the Time Machine feature.

If Time machine was previously set up, here’s a quick guide to using it to restore the deleted file:

  1. Start by using the Finder app to navigate to the location where the file used to be. Then, click on the Time Machine icon from the menu bar (top-right corner) and click on Enter Time Machine.
  2. Next, use the slider at the bottom right corner to set a date prior to when you accidentally deleted the file. Then, select the file that you need to recover and click on Restore.

If this method wasn’t applicable, move down to Method 3.

Method 4: Using a third party recovery software

If all the methods above have not been applicable to your situation, you have little other choices but to use a third-party software. And even then, the chances of recovering the file are quite slim.

But if you have no other choice but to make use of a third party software, here’s a list of powerful recovery 3rd party programs that might help you get your files back:
