How to Record Voice on a MacOS

For those of you who want to record your own voice on your Mac or some simple sound effects, here you can find how to do it. You do not need to install any specific app. macOS (or Mac OS X) provide built-in apps that you can use for this purpose.

Record Voice on Mac Using QuickTime Player

Aside from the typical use of QuickTime for consuming video content, it can also be used for recording sounds or voices. QuickTime can use your built-in or external microphone as an input device and save the recordings into m4a files. Here are all the steps explained.

Note: Before performing any of the following steps, make sure you have a built-in microphone or external mic connected to your Mac.

  1. First, launch QuickTime Player (You can find it in the Applications folder).
  2. Now, click on the File menu and choose New Audio Recording.
  3. Once you see the Audio Recording window, click the red (record) button to start recording the audio input from your microphone.
  4. When finished, just click the same button, and the recording will stop.
  5. To save the recording, go to File menu and select Save.
  6. In the next window, type the name for your recording and location where you want to save it.
  7. Click Save and you are done.

QuickTime automatically saves the recording into a high-quality compressed audio file (m4a). This file type is widely recognized. You play it in iTunes, Windows PCs, iPhones, or Android devices. If you are concerned about how much audio you can record, you shouldn’t be. There is no limit (other than your storage capacity) that will stop your recording at a specific time. Just make sure you have enough storage on your Mac, and you can record hours of audio.

Record Voice on Mac Using Garageband

Garageband is another macOS (and Mac OS X) built-in app that you can use for recording audio on your Mac. It is more professional when compared with QuickTime Player, and it offers a variety of options. You can also save Garageband files in different formats. However, if you want to record voice, here is how to do that.

Note: Before performing any of the following steps, make sure you have a built-in microphone or external mic connected to your Mac.

  1. Launch Garageband (You can find it in the Applications folder).
  2. Select Preferences from the main menu.
  3. Now, click the Audio/MIDI tab, click the pull-down menu next to Audio Input and select Line In in you have an external mic or Line In if you use a built-in microphone.
  4. Next, click the Add Track button (+) located at the bottom left corner of the app. (Or click on Track and select New Track from the menu).
  5. Click the Real Instrument track option. And, then click Create.
  6. Slide the slider at the bottom to adjust the Recording Level according to your likings. Then, try speaking into the microphone. Check the levels (they should move), to ensure your sound is being captured.
  7. Place the white playhead to the point in the timeline where you want your recording to begin.
  8. Now, click the Record Button and the recording is started.
  9. To stop the recording, press the same (record button) you clicked when starting the recording.
  10. To save the recording, click the File menu and choose Save As.
  11. Name your file and choose the saving location as well as the file format for the recording.
  12. Once you are done, click Save and you have your recording ready to play.
