How to Move the Libraries folder above “This PC” on Windows 10

If you’re familiar with using the right-hand pane of File Explorer to get around more quickly, you might have noticed that with the launch of Windows 10, the Libraries folder has been moved under the “This PC” (Computer) folder. Until now (on Windows 8), the Libraries folder was located above the “This PC” (Computer) folder

This might not seem like a big deal, but if you like to streamline your work as much as possible, a small change like this might end up affecting your workflow. Fortunately, you can move the Libraries folder above This PC and replicate the old behavior present on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.

Moving the Libraries folder above This PC in Windows 10

Moving the Libraries folder above This PC to replicate the old Windows 8 order will require you to do a minor registry tweak. Don’t worry as the steps are quite simple and we’ll guide you through the whole thing.

Note: Keep in mind that in order for this to work, you must be using an administrator account.

Here’s a quick guide on how to change the position of the Libraries folder in the right-hand side menu of File Explorer:

  1. Press Windows key + R to open a Run window. Then, type “regedit” and hit Enter to open up Registry Editor.
  2. Using the left pane of Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ CLSID \ {031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5}
  3. Move to the right-hand panel and double click on SortOrderIndex. Then, set the Base to Decimal and change the Value data from 84 to 50 (or an even lower value). After you hit OK to save the changes you can safely close Registry Editor.
  4. Now to test if the changes where successful, close any File Explorer window and open another brand new window. You should notice that the Libraries folder now stands majestically above This PC (like it used to).
