Yes. iTunes music library can be exported and used on to a different computer/laptop. In this guide, i will explain how to export the music library to a different PC with iTunes installed on it. Before you begin, make sure your iTunes is already backed up.
Migrating is very easy, all you need to do is copy the folder. I would suggest getting an external disk or drive before you begin the transfer, large enough to hold your library. So first, check the size of your Library.
To check size, go to the following paths on your computer:
- Windows XP: Navigate to \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\
Right click My Music and select Properties. (note down the size of the data)
- Windows Vista: Navigate to \Users\username\Music\iTunes.
Right click the iTunes folder and select Properties. (note down the size of the data)
- Windows 7 and Windows 8: Navigate to \Users\username\My Music\
Right click the iTunes folder and select Properties. (note down the size of the data)
Once you’ve got the size of your library/data, make sure that your external drive is large enough to hold it.
Let’s begin!
1. Insert the external drive into the computer you wish to copy library from.
2. Go to the path where the library is, this is where you checked the size at (in the steps above).
3. Copy the folder, by right clicking on it and selecting Copy.
4. Then hold windows key and press E to open Explorer.
5. Locate the drive you connected.
6. Open it, right click anywhere inside the drive and select Paste.
Your iTunes folder (Library) is now copied onto the External Drive.
7. Now eject the drive.
8. Plug it into the computer you wish to copy the data to.
9. Now open it, win key + e, and then open the drive.
10. right click the folder (iTunes) and select “Copy”.
11. Look at the path shown below for your destination computer.
- Windows XP: Navigate to \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\.
If Windows XP go to My Docments and paste the My Music folder.
- Windows Vista: Navigate to \Users\username\Music\iTunes.
If Windows Vista, go to Music folder and paste the iTunes folder.
- Windows 7 and Windows 8: Navigate to \Users\username\My Music\iTunes.
If Windows 7 / 8, paste the iTunes folder into My Music.
Your library has now been successfully exported / migrated to your new machine. For further options, i would suggest visiting the Apple site on https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204318.
