The Chinese technology company Xiaomi has come a long way since its early days. Their cheap smartphones with good hardware like the Redmi/ Redmi Note series have been extremely popular in countries like India and China. Xiaomi’s smartphone operating system MIUI, (built on top of Android) has also grown to become a decent ROM.
However, one of the drawbacks of MIUI is that it does not allow you to easily expand notifications from the notification bar. This is relatively much easier in stock Android, where all you need to do is swipe down on a notification to expand it.
Because of the flexibility of Android, though, we can easily get this much needed feature on Xiaomi phones (without having to root our phones!). All we need to do is install a simple app called Material Notification Shade from the Play Store.
First, a word on the default method to expand notifications on MIUI. If you want to expand a Whatsapp notification to read the messages, you have to swipe down with two fingers on the notification to expand it. This is very inconvenient, and you just end up opening the app instead.
On stock Android Marshmallow onwards, the way to deal with notifications is a lot more advanced. Not only can you easily expand notifications, you can also take action on individual notifications bundled together. For example, if you get 5 emails, you can take action on any one of those five emails from the notification bar itself. Such functionality simply is not available on MIUI by default.
Material Notification Shade adds all the stock android notification bar features on your Xiaomi device. It will replace your default MIUI notification shade with the stock android notification shade. Using this app, you can expand notifications by simply swiping down on them with one finger.
In order to get this app working, all you need to do is install it from the Play Store. Then, open the app and make sure it is turned ‘on’.
It will ask for permission to access notifications. As soon as you allow access, the app should be up and running, and you will not have to worry about it anymore.
Due to MIUI’s aggressive app killing, you might have to lock this app in memory. Otherwise, it will just keep killing the app, taking you back to the old notification shade. Here’s how to lock the app in memory –
- Open the recent apps screen by pressing the right navigation key, and look for the Material Notification Shade app.
- Swipe down on the app, and you will see the option to lock the app in memory.
Once you press the lock button, the app will then stay in memory permanently, until you kill it yourself. You might have to reopen it whenever you restart your phone, because it can have problems starting up automatically. To do that, you just have to open the app and make sure it is on.
This all might seem like a lot of work for a small feature, but if you try it for yourself, you will find that this app is a blessing. It makes it a whole lot easier to deal with the flood of notifications we receive everyday.
