Thunderbird is an open source e-mail software used by a large number of users on the internet, with thousands of plugins available for free. However, The need to do a back up arises when either your mailbox profile is corrupt, resulting in functions being limited OR you may just be migrating to a new computer where you want to have the exact same structure, mails and contacts copied.

To begin, follow the steps below.
Close Thunderbird if it’s open and run the MozBackup setup. From the operation type screen choose “Mozilla Thunderbird” and Click Next.
Click Next, the Profile Selection screen will appear. If you have multiple profiles on Thunderbrid, they will appear under “Select the profile you want to back up” chose the profile you wish to back up.
Under “Save backup to directory” section, chose where you want the back up to be saved. This can be your externally attached drive or a folder on the same computer, if the restore is to be done on the same.
Click Next, you will be prompted with a choice if putting a password on your file. Make the selection and click Next. Select the components here that you wished to be backed up.
Click Next, MozBackup will begin backing up your profile and will indicate this in a progress bar shown on your screen.
Click Finish, once the back up is complete. Now, if you are going to restore the profile on the same system, then run the same copy of MozBackup else redownload it on the system where you wish the profile to be restored, then go through the same steps as above to run the setup and choose “Restore a Profile” from the Operating Type menu. Click Browse to select the backed up file and click Next, Next and Finish.
