Epic Games has been the highlight of news lately. The company is mostly known for the Unreal Engine platform and the hugely popular game Fortnite. It is battling against giants like Apple and Google to either remove or decrease the 30% transaction fee that both Apple and Google charge.
Now, Epic has provided another reason for it to be on the news. The upcoming Silent Assassin experience from IO Interactive Hitman 3 will be exclusively available on Epic Games Store. Hitman 3 is going to be IO Interactive’s first publication. Hakan Abrak, the co-owner and CEO of IO, said, “Self-publishing Hitman 3 is a big step for IO Interactive in achieving our highly ambitious goals as an independent studio.” It clearly is a big step for the studio, and Epic Games has provided the required platform to the developer. The game will also be available on current and next-gen consoles too.
PC gaming is praised for its open nature. From allowing mods to the ability to play to your own settings, a PC can do it all. It has its shortcomings, such as piracy, but the openness of the platform is one of the main reasons why people prefer PC gaming. Big game publishers such as Ubisoft and Blizzard have their own stores, but these companies do not compel players to buy games from their platforms. However, Epic does business differently. Epic Store attracts publishers to release games on its platform exclusively, which restricts the open structure of PC gaming.
People have criticized this practice by Epic Games since its inception, but it has started to become a norm in PC gaming. Epic Games Store regularly provides free games (including big AAA titles such as GTA V and Arkham series) on the platform, so it is reasonable to assume that most gamers may have the Epic Launcher installed on their computers. Lastly, Hitman 2016 will be available for free on the Epic Games Store from 27th August to 3rd September.
