HiSilicon Announces A New Chip Supporting 8K/120FPS Playback With Support For AVS3 And HEVC Encoding

Cheaper 8K TVs Soon?

As 4K takes more prominence as a display resolution standard, companies and ecosystem providers are already looking at the next big thing. Many companies have showcased their 8K TV sets and some like Samsung already have a few 8K models on sale. Obviously it’s a very expensive standard to get in right now and there’s no de facto codec. This was seen in the initial days of 4K adoption where there were a number of codecs but ultimately HEVC gained prominence due to its efficiency. Similarly, with 8K adoption, we will see a new cycle where new standards are created, optimized and are supported by an increasing base of silicon.

AVS is a new Codec from China which is short for Audio and Video Coding Standard Workgroup of China and they are committed to setting technical standards for compression, decompression, processing, and representation of digital audio and video. AVS3 is being pitched as a new codec standard for 8K and it already has silicon support with HiSilicon announcing a new end-to-end solution chip based on the AVS3 standard at IBC 2019.

The Hi3796CV300 is the world’s 1st Smart Home product to support 8K@120fps HEVC, AVS3 video decoding, 4TOPS NPU and 4K UI capabilities. It brings more natural and smooth interactions to every home and AI can also enhance the experience of the smart home across many use cases too.

This chip also supports HEVC and HiSilicon claims that this it the industry’s first 8K@120fps Ultra-HD Video and Voice Platform, with HEVC and AVS3 video decoding. This chip is powered by an octa-core CPU with A73 cores and a Mali G52 NP6 GPU. This chip also has a commendable NPU unit delivering up to 4 TOPs for AI and ML workloads. As for connectivity, Hisilicon states “This framework for Connectivity in the Smart Home is composed of industry-leading 5G, 10GPON, G.hn, and Wi-Fi 6 solutions. As communication speeds increase up to 1Gbps, latency can be reduced to less than 100ms. As a result, the HomeBus solution ensures both high bandwidth & low latency anywhere in the home.

With any new standard, robust DRM solutions are also developed to protect the content and it seems Irdeto is working on such solutions. Irdeto is actually the company behind Denuvo and they are one of the industry leaders when it comes to DRM solutions. They were also the first to launch a Government approved DRM solution in China.

Chinese companies can make the foray into 8K cheaper as the standard gets wider adoption. We have seen this with 4K, where you can now buy a UHD TV under 400$.
