Google Announces Reforms in Maintaining User Privacy Starting 2020

Users presence online has become quite a powerful entity. While most of the world has access to the internet, there are now issues rising that actually compromise their presence. These issues mainly pertain to the privacy aspect of the internet. In recent years, there has been a lot of outcry about the issue. From iCloud photos breach to the NSA reportedly spying on people. Companies like Apple have really revamped their protocols to fit data usage and ad support.

Among these companies comes Google too. Google recently updated their blog, posting about its plans for the year 2020. The post is by their Senior Product Manager for Trust and Privacy, Chetna Bindra. According to the post, she claims the issues users face with ad campaigns online. These range from unwanted ads being pushed to certain users to user data being used in uncertain ways. The blog post clarifies that starting February 2020, Google would monitor and make sure people registered with its ad service would not be able to showcase unrelated ads. Google would make sure users get contextual ads. What this means is that given that you’re on a certain real estate website. You’d get ads from, for example, Ikea. This would ensure that companies aren’t able to unwantedly build a social profile and existence, flooding the websites with completely unrelated ads.

They added the terms for EU and Irish users (perhaps these may further reform following Brexit). To quote the post,

We’ll also update our EU User Consent Policy audit program for publishers and advertisers, as well as our audits for the Authorized Buyers program. And we will continue to engage with data protection authorities, including the Irish Data Protection Commission as they continue their investigation into data protection practices in the context of Authorized Buyers.

Google concludes by saying that people continue to use their service for the experience. This continued growth in use would only be possible when and if they maintain user trust and provide the comfort of a safe and healthy browsing experience.
