Fix: OneNote 2007 Hpyerlinks Error ‘This operation has been cancelled’ on Creators Update

The aftermath of the release of the Windows 10 Creators Update was far, far from pleasant – Microsoft yet again rolled out an update to the Windows Operating System that contained a significantly large amount of bugs and issues and broke a ton of different things for different users, things that were working perfectly fine before pre-update. One of the more obscure functionalities that the Windows 10 Creators Update broke was hyperlinks in OneNote 2007 – after the installation of the Creators Update, hyperlinks no longer open when clicked on for many people who use OneNote 2007 on their Windows 10 computers.

While it is true that OneNote 2007 is quite a dated piece of software, this fact does in no way justify the application losing its ability to perform a task as simple as successfully opening a hyperlink when it is clicked on, especially considering the significant user-base that the program still has. When users affected by this problem click on a hyperlink, the link does not open, and they instead see an error message that reads:

“This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.”

Microsoft’s dedicated fix for this specific error message is of no help to affected users as by the look of things, the fix is not compatible with the Windows 10 Creators Update – at least not as of yet. Hyperlinks work fine in Microsoft’s online version of OneNote; it is only with the standalone OneNote 2007 that users experience this specific problem. In almost all cases, this issue is caused by a specific registry key being damaged or corrupted, which is why it can be fixed by simply replacing the registry key with a completely intact version of itself. Here’s how you can go about doing so:

Phase 1: Export the registry key from an unaffected computer

  1. Find yourself a computer that has not been affected by this problem, and on it press the Windows Logo key + R to open a Run
  2. Type regedit into the Run dialog and press Enter to launch the Registry Editor.
  3. In the left pane of the Registry Editor, navigate to the following directory:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Classes > htmlfile > shell > open

  1. In the left pane of the Registry Editor, click on the command subkey under the open
  2. Click on File (or Registry) in the toolbar at the top of the Registry Editor window, and click on Export….
  3. Navigate to the location where you want the registry key to be saved, type a unique file name for the file into the File name field, and click on Save.
  4. Close the Registry Editor.

Phase 2: Import the registry key to the affected computer

  1. Move the exported registry key to a USB, an external HDD or any other portable storage device, and then move it from the storage device to the affected computer.
  2. Navigate to where you moved the registry key to on the affected computer, locate the .reg file for the registry key and double-click on it to have the registry key imported to the affected computer’s registry.
  3. If presented with a warning or asked to confirm the action, click on Yes > OK.

Phase 3: Make sure that the value of a specific string is “htmlfile”

  1. On the affected computer, press the Windows Logo key + R to open a Run
  2. Type regedit into the Run dialog and press Enter to launch the Registry Editor.
  3. In the left pane of the Registry Editor, double-click on the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT key to expand it, and then locate and click on the .html subkey under it.
  4. In the right pane of the Registry Editor, double-click on the (Default) string to modify it, and check to see what its Value data field contains. If the string’s Value data field contains anything other than htmlfile, replace whatever is in the field with htmlfile, and click on OK.
  5. Close the Registry Editor.

When done, restart your computer and check to see whether or not the problem has been resolved once the computer boots up.
