Softthinks Agent Service is a backup utility by Dell Inc. It is incorporated in numerous Dell laptops and computers. Its main function is to backup existing files and programs periodically. This utility is often tied with Dell Back and Recovery or Dell DataSafe Local Backup bundle. In many previous versions of the Windows operating system, this utility proved to be very useful and helped in restoring the system if got corrupt due to any reason.
Recently, users reported that this service caused their computer to lag and consume a lot of CPU and Disk resources. The reason why this utility consumes this many resources is that it is backing up your existing files on your computer. It has a set timer or trigger which causes it to start each time. Sometimes the stretch can go to 100% disk usage for a minimum of two hours.
Solution: Disabling the Service
After experimenting many workarounds, we found out that there is only one way you can solve the high disk usage; by disabling the service from the service manager. Dell hasn’t developed an update to target this issue which is why no alternative is available. You can always use Windows Backup and Restore utility to keep a copy of your data and configurations just in case.
- Press Windows + R to launch the Run application. Type “services.msc” in the dialogue box and press Enter. This will launch all the services present on your computer in front of you.
- Once in the services window, search through the list until you find Softthinks Agent Service. Double-click it to open its properties. Underneath the service status, click on “Stop”. This will stop the service from running immediately and cause the disk usage to return to normal.
- If you want to permanently stop the service, you can click on Startup type and select “Disabled” from the list of options from the drop-down menu. Now this service will be disabled until you enable it yourself using the same method. Restart your computer and check if disk/CPU usage returned back to normal.
