There are a ton of things that can go wrong when trying to install an HP printer. For starters, you might accidentally use the wrong installation package or the installation package you use may be corrupt. Furthermore, there are a number of different errors that may interrupt the installation of your printer and cause it to fail. One such error is “Fatal error / MSI.netdevicemanager40”. There is a possibility that the “Fatal error / MSI.netdevicemanager40” error may cause your HP printer’s installation to fail regardless of what HP printer you are trying to install or what version of the Windows Operating System your computer is running on.
Affected users usually see the “Fatal error / MSI.netdevicemanager40” in the preliminary stages of their HP printer’s installation. The “Fatal error / MSI.netdevicemanager40” error is one that can leave even the most experienced HP printer users confused as to what they should do next, although this error is not at all unfixable. If you are suffering from the “Fatal error / MSI.netdevicemanager40” error and want to fix it, here’s exactly how you can do so:
Phase 1: Clear your computer’s temporary files
Press Windows Logo + R to open a Run
Type %temp% into the Run dialog and press Enter.
Press Ctrl + A to select all of the files and folders in your computer’s Temp
Confirm the action in the consequent popup.
If some temporary files are in use, you will have to skip them during the deletion process.
Phase 2: Download and extract the software and drivers pack for your printer
Type your printer’s exact model number in the Enter my HP model number field and click on Find my product.
Click on your HP printer among the search results on the next page.
On the Software and driver results page for your HP printer, click on the Download button in front of the Full Feature Software and Drivers for your printer under the Driver-Product Installation Software
As soon as the software and drivers package has been downloaded, navigate to it and double-click on it to launch it and begin the extraction of the package.
When the drivers and software installation window pops up, wait for a couple of seconds and then click on Cancel.
Phase 3: Move the extracted package from your Temp folder to your Desktop
- Press Windows Logo + R to open a Run
- Type %temp% into the Run dialog and press Enter.
- In the Temp folder, locate and right-click on a folder that has a name beginning with 7z – 7zS2356, for example.
- Click on Copy in the contextual menu.
- Close all open programs and windows.
- Right-click on an empty space on your Desktop and click on Paste.
Phase 4: Uninstall any and all HP printer drivers and software
- Open the newly moved 7z
- Navigate to Util > CCC.
- Double-click on the file titled uninstall_L4 to launch the uninstallation wizard.
- Follow the uninstallation wizard through to the end.
- Restart your computer.
Phase 5: Run Disk Cleanup and install the latest version of Adobe Flash Player
Once your computer boots up:
- Open the Start Menu.
- Search for “disk cleanup”.
- Click on the search result titled “Disk Cleanup”.
- In the dropdown menu, select the drive where your OS is installed (drive C, in most cases).
- Click on OK.
- Once the Disk Cleanup wizard is done working its magic, select all the files in the list and click on OK to delete them.

Phase 6: Install your HP printer
- Open the 7z folder on your Desktop.
- Locate and double-click on the file named exe to launch the installation wizard for your printer.
- Follow the installation wizard’s onscreen instructions through to the very end, and you should be successful in installing your HP printer.
