According to the latest data from GSD and report corroborated by Games Industry.biz, a total of 159 million console and PC games were sold across tracked European markets in 2022, representing a decrease of 7.1% compared to the previous year.

The data, which tracks both physical and digital game sales across Europe, shows that 82.5 million games were sold via digital downloads, while 76.6 million were sold through physical retailers. However, when focusing solely on new games released in 2022, sales are up by 16% compared to those released in 2021.

Video Game Sales Comparison

According to the data, sales of FIFA 23 increased by 3% compared to FIFA 22, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 saw a significant 73% increase in sales compared to Call of Duty: Vanguard.

When combined, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet would have placed at No.6 on the sales chart, surpassing its sister title, Pokémon Legends: Arceus. It’s important to note that digital sales were not included in the data for the Pokémon games, so they may have placed even higher.

The sales for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet were also 13% higher than the 2021 Diamond and Pearl remakes and 8% higher than the previous mainline releases, Pokémon Sword and Shield. In terms of digital vs physical sales, 64% of games were purchased digitally, which is a decrease from the 65% figure in 2021.

This analysis only includes games that are available both physically and digitally in countries where physical and digital data is available. Other notable games in the top ten include LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga at No.8, and three PlayStation exclusives: God of War Ragnarok at No.7, Horizon: Forbidden West at No.9, and Gran Turismo 7 at No.10.

Among non-Pokemon titles, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe was the best-selling Switch game at No.11, with Nintendo Switch Sports following closely at No.13.

UK Was The Best Gaming Market In Europe In 2022 

In Europe, the United Kingdom was the leading market for video game sales, experiencing a 6% decrease in sales year-on-year. Germany and France followed closely behind, with a 13% and 3% decrease in sales respectively.

Meanwhile, Spain and Italy saw an increase in sales by 1% and 2% respectively. The UK had strong performance in sales for games such as FIFA, Call of Duty, LEGO Star Wars, and Elden Ring. On the other hand, Germany and France had a strong performance in sales for Nintendo Switch titles like Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, Nintendo Switch Sports, and Pokémon Violet and Scarlet.

FIFA 23 was the top-selling game in most major markets, with the exception of a few countries like Finland where Elden Ring was the best-seller. Other games that did not make it to the top 20 but were among the top 50 include NBA 2K23, It Takes Two, Splatoon 3, WWE 2K22, Mario Strikers: Battle League Football, Sonic Frontiers, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, and Dying Light 2: Stay Human.

Nintendo Switch Was The Best Selling Console In Europe In 2022

According to recent data, 5.3 million consoles were sold in tracked territories last year, a decrease of 25% compared to the previous year. The Nintendo Switch remained the top-selling console, despite a 15% decrease in sales.

The PlayStation 5 was the second best-selling console, with a 35% decrease in sales. The Xbox Series X|S were the only platforms to experience a growth in sales, with a 4.4% increase. However, it still holds the third position.

The Switch was the best-selling console in most countries, with a few exceptions such as Denmark and Sweden where the PlayStation 5 was the top-selling console and in Norway where the Xbox Series X|S was the top-selling console. Note that the data for Germany and UK are missing/not recorded.

Gaming Accessories And Peripherals Sales In European Market

In the European market, sales of peripherals and toys-to-life products fell by 10% in 2022, totaling 18 million units sold. The PlayStation 5 DualSense controller was the best-selling accessory, with a 12% increase in sales over the previous year.

The PlayStation 4 DualShock controller was next, with a 3.2% decrease in sales. The Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers saw a 23.7% decrease in sales, while the Xbox Series Wireless Controller saw a 32.2% decrease in sales.

The Sony PlayStation 5 Pulse 3D Headset was the best-selling non-controller accessory in 2021, but sales fell 3.6%. Additionally, sales of points cards and wallets fell 8% in 2022, with 22.4 million products sold across European markets.
