Microsoft Edge has been prone to bugs since its release. One such troublesome issue that has created hardships for many users is the browser opening up to the same website (typically softwareupdateproduct.com) every time you start it. That’s not the worst part though; the worst part is the tab getting locked and not allowing you to do anything on the browser.
Most of the people think that this is a virus or a spyware but it’s in fact just a locked web page. Whenever you restart Edge, it reopens the previously opened pages and gets locked. We present 2 methods to solve this issue:
Method 1: Clear Browsing Data on Edge
As the first step, you need to open Edge indirectly. When you open it normally, you will see the BSOD again so let’s say, there is a link in your email and you click on it to open the website via Edge. (Remember, Edge is needed to be the default browser for this method to work; if that’s not the case, then you can try the second method and skip the next steps.) When the browser window opens for you, you should see two tabs: the first one will be the offending one and the second one will be the website that you tried to access via the link.
REMEMBER TO NOT OPEN THE OFFENDING TAB; INSTEAD, JUST CLOSE IT BY PRESSING THE CROSS BUTTON.
Now click on the “…” button on the top right hand side of your browser window. From the drop-down list, click on “Settings”. Now search for the section “Clear browser data”. Click on the button beneath it.
Follow the on-screen instructions to clear the browsing data.
Restart Edge and see if the error still persists.
Method 2: Via Command Prompt
If Edge is not your default browser, then too you don’t have a need to worry. Go through these steps:
Press “Windows key + X” to pop the menu above the start button up.
Click on “Command prompt (Admin)” from the list.
In the terminal type this command: start Microsoft-edge:http://www.microsoft.com and press enter.
MS Edge should open now with you having the offending tab to your left. Click on the cross button to close it and follow the steps 2 and 3 from the method above.
