Seems like the words “free” and “EA” would never really go along. But in the current situation, where we are transitioning from current generation consoles to the next, we might see something different. According to a tweet from Nibel, that seems to be the case, at least.
Looks like EA will allow you to upgrade current-gen versions of upcoming games to next-gen versions for free

The tweet links to a piece by gamesradar.com. According to it, the company (EA) confirms that all the upcoming games would be upgraded for the next generation of the consoles, which are The PS5 and Xbox Series X.
According to the EA COO, he claimed that the company would be launching a couple of games for the current generation of consoles. He said that since life for these consoles is coming to an end, the company is taking this decision. In the press conference, he said that players who get these would not have to buy them again. This is especially a hassle given the time frame of the launch. Consider this, the new consoles would arrive sometime around the holiday season. Consequently, titles such as FIFA come out around September and October. This would create a disparity since player would want to get the title and get it on the next-generation console as well.
The article also questions what they actually meant with this statement. Could they be referring to a backwards compatibility system? If yes, then wouldn’t it be redundant to add this since both the consoles would possess this. Additionally, would it also mean that it is just for digital purchases? All these questions are still a bit hazy. Perhaps we would know for sure in a bit. Till then, we can join others in this shocking revelation. As far as EA is concerned, nothing is ever free.
