Modders of the PC gaming community never cease to amaze: a new mod for Doom 2 re-imagines the game as a survival horror experience. The ‘Total Chaos’ mod is a total conversion mod running on the GZDoom source port that took 6 years to develop.
Set on a remote island names Fort Oasis, Total Chaos follows the player as they explore the mysterious disappearance of a community of coal miners. “Something, clearly, has gone very wrong with this place. Upon your arrival at Fort Oasis, you receive a strange radio transmission. Someone wants to he found,” reads the mod description.
Total Chaos features 6 chapters in which the player is equipped with a bunch of new weapons and has to fight 8 “horrifying fiends”. Thanks to the GZDoom source port, the mod offers HD textures and 3D models, have a look:
Playing through the mod is a very unforgiving experience, as ammo and health packs are scarce: Creator wadaholic says that you will have to use “tireirons, pickaxes, shivs, and garden tools” instead of relying on munitions.
The mod author states that, in the future, he plans to add a new crafting system and improve optimization. Adding the ability to stack smaller items such as stimpacks and med-kits is also on the agenda. The mod will be supported for at least another year, as there is a survival mode with gameplay modifiers in the works.
The Total Chaos mod can be downloaded from ModDB, and you’ll need a copy of Doom 2 along with the latest version of GZDoom source port. It’s a pretty hefty download, too, as the standalone version takes up a whopping 2.61 GB.
