Dead Rising Developer Capcom Vancouver Shuts Down, Dead Rising 5 Cancelled

Capcom Vancouver, the developer of the open world zombie game series Dead Rising, will be shutting down following an announcement from their parent company. Development on Dead Rising 5, the upcoming game in the series, will end following the terminations of various development projects.

Capcom Vancouver

Capcom Game Studio Vancouver, a subsidiary of Japanese studio Capcom, took over development of the Dead Rising series after it was initiated by the parent company. On Tuesday September 18th, the company issued a press release on the matter. Capcom said that they are currently “reviewing the allocation of its development resources that support the production of world-class content” and will be suspending operations. On the financial front, Capcom says that, as a result of the project cancellations and employee terminations, they expect losses of approximately 4.5 billion yen.

In their public statement regarding the development resources, Capcom said:

“Capcom is currently reviewing the allocation of its development resources that support the production of world-class content. Capcom has been focused on increasing the efficiency and growth of its game development operations. To support this objective, new R&D facilities and annual hiring have been underway at the Osaka headquarters. In consideration of this process, as a result of reviewing titles in development at Capcom Vancouver, Capcom has decided to cancel the development projects at this studio and will concentrate development of major titles in Japan.

We appreciate the hard work and contributions of all the studio team members in creating unforgettable gameplay experiences for the Dead Rising series and Puzzle Fighter.”

Dead Rising 5

While the game was never officially announced, we already knew that Dead Rising 5 was under development. Judging from the screenshots that were leaked a while ago, development on Dead Rising 5 looked like it had come a long way. Unfortunately, the game has now been cancelled, and the priorities will be shifted towards other major titles, such as Monster Hunter World.
