FIX: CTRL + TAB Hotkey Combination Not Working on a Computer with an NVIDIA GPU

Windows has hordes of different hotkey combinations that make navigating computers easier for Windows users. One of the most popular and most commonly used hotkey combinations on Windows is CTRL + TAB. CTRL + TAB is the keyboard shortcut that can be used to switch to the next tab when a user is in, say, an internet browser. CTRL + TAB is arguably the most widely known and widely used Windows keyboard hotkey combination out there, but unfortunately, many Windows users who have computers with NVIDIA GPUs experience an issue where the CTRL + TAB keyboard combination stops working for them following an upgrade of their computer’s NVIDIA GPU’s driver software.

Thankfully, the culprit behind this problem has been identified as ShadowPlay – a utility that comes bundled with the NVIDIA GeForce Experience application – or rather a feature of ShadowPlay by the name of Desktop Capture. Since the cause of this problem has been identified, solutions to this issue have also become known. The simplest way to fix this issue is to turn ShadowPlay off altogether. In order to do so, you need to:

Locate and right-click on the NVIDIA GeForce Experience icon in your computer’s system tray.

Click on Open NVIDIA GeForce Experience in the context menu.

Once you see the NVIDIA GeForce Experience desktop interface, click on the ShadowPlay button located at the top-right corner of the interface.

You’ll see what looks like a power button. Right-click on this button and set ShadowPlay to Off, disabling it.

Restart your computer.

After your computer boots up, check to see whether or not the issue has been fixed and you should see that the CTRL + TAB keyboard combination now works like it is supposed to.

However, if you would rather keep ShadowPlay and not disable it altogether, you can simply disable Desktop Capture – the feature of ShadowPlay that causes this issue – instead. To do so, you need to:

Locate and right-click on the NVIDIA GeForce Experience icon in your computer’s system tray.

Click on Open NVIDIA GeForce Experience in the context menu.

Once you see the NVIDIA GeForce Experience desktop interface, navigate to the Preferences

Click on ShadowPlay in the left pane.

Uncheck the checkbox beside the Allow desktop capture

Close the NVIDIA GeForce Experience interface and restart your computer.

Once your computer boots up, you should see that the CTRL + TAB keyboard combination is no longer broken and now works.
