It’s been 9 years since Crysis 3 hit PCs back in 2013 and since then Crytek has released two remasters bringing modern updates to all three numbered Crysis games. But with the release of those remasters, everyone had the same question on their minds that is there a new Crysis game coming? Players quickly started speculating but nothing Crytek never said anything or even hinted at a new entry into the series. However, that changes today.
Taking to social media, Crytek has officially announced the fourth installment in the Crysis franchise. In a cryptic teaser showing everything from an unstable sun to falling buildings, a simple tagline at the end read “Join the journey. Become the Hero” with no other information whatsoever. From the ruins of those same falling buildings emerged a large number “4” in the teaser which confirmed that Crysis 4 is coming.
It's time to join the journey and be the hero.

This announcement came mere hours after Crytek China posted a teaser image on Bilibili that said “The ‘Crysis 4’ project is confirmed, opening a new nano battlefield!” It seems that post has now been deleted as the game has actually been officially announced worldwide since then. In the announcement blog post, Crytek CEO Avni Yerli stated that Crysis 4 is “in the early stages of development so it will be a while“, so don’t expect this game to be released anytime soon. My guess is it’s 2 years away at best.
In the same blog post, Avni Yerli also opened positions at the company to hire talent to work on Crysis 4, suggesting that the game is has likely just exited pre-production and is just now entering production. And it’s important to note that Crysis 4 is a working title for now and not the official name of the whatever the fourth mainline Cryisis game will be. Of course, with a new Crysis we can expect state-of-the-art graphics that challenge even the highest-end hardware available today and we’re being promised a “truly next-gen shooter“.
Crysis is incredibly important to so many people – it’s beloved by gamers everywhere, and some of those working in the industry today are doing so because of the original game – so we want to make sure the next instalment in the franchise lives up to all of your expectations. As development progresses we will release more details when we can. But in the meantime, know that our dedicated and talented team is working hard to bring you a truly next-gen shooter.
The original Crysis created one of the most impactful memes in gaming because the game was notoriously difficult to run on even then-current-gen hardware. Not to take away from its graphical fidelity, but part of why it pushed every PC to its breaking point is because the game was never known for being the cornerstone to video game optimization. In fact, the new Crysis remasters are also quite poorly optimized and it seems like Crysis is now more synonymous with the “But, can it run Crysis?” meme than it is with actually providing a enjoyable gaming experience for everyone.
With all that being said, look out for details on Crysis 4 in the coming months as the company promised to reveal more as development progresses. This announcement has certainly come as a surprise but even more of a shocker was Blizzard announcing a brand-new survival IP the same day as Crysis 4 is made official.
