Taking place in Cologne, Germany, ESL One Cologne 2018 started on 3rd July and will end with the finals on 8th July. A total of 16 teams started out competing in the prestigious E-sports competition. After a host of highly competitive matches, two teams now remain to compete in the finals.

Cologne is hosting the ESL One Counter-Strike tournament for the fifth year in a row now. Over the years, this tournament has built a dedicated fan base with spectators coming to watch the tournament from all over the world.

The Appeal of Counter-Strike

Counter-Strike has consistently been one of the most popular E-sports games for years now. In the game, two groups of players (terrorists and counter-terrorists) compete against each other using guns, grenades and other aides.

Steam

The first version of the game was released in 1999, and Counter-Strike has since enjoyed wide support for its tactical gameplay and space for complex strategy. The latest version of the game, Counter-Strike : Global Offensive has drastically improved graphics and performance, but the essence of the game remains the same.   More than anything else, though, Counter-Strike tests the player’s quick reflexes and strategic thinking.

A Large Audience

The semi-finals saw 15,000 people turning up in Lanxess Arena to watch the semi-finals live. Lanxess Arena has earned the name ‘The Cathedral of Counter-Strike’ by its fans.

It is speculated that the finals will attract crowds in similar numbers. “The mood is great, almost 40 per cent of the guests are international,” a spokesman of the ESL One tournament revealed in the afternoon.  Visitors turned up for the competition from faraway places like Australia, India and the USA.

ESL One Cologne also enjoys an extensive online audience. The games are streamed live for the benefit of fans all over the world. You can tune in tomorrow to watch the very best Counter-Strike players in the world compete for the Championship.
