Strange things can happen while running Microsoft Windows and one such strange occurrence is when a user opens a program from the start menu, the program icon starts showing up in the taskbar, but the window never appears. When you try to hover over the icon, it shows you a tiny window preview of the application but when you right click and select “Maximize”, nothing happens. This issue has been reported by users from Windows 7, 8 and even 10. Today we present a fix that will work on all the Windows versions and solve this issue once and for all.
The root of the cause (for most of the users) has been the fact that there are two monitors enabled but only one of them, plugged in. So, the program that you are trying to run and is not showing up, it’s actually running on the second monitor where you are unable to see it. Follow these steps to fix the issue:
Press Windows key + P to bring up the Project window/option.
While on the screen, keep pressing P until the Computer-only/PC-Screen only option is selected.
Method 2: Check Extended Displays
Another situation in which this problem might occur is when you have extended your display by connecting another monitor. Follow these diagnostic steps:
If the second screen/monitor isn’t connected, turn extended display off.
If the second monitor is connected, turn it on to see if you can see the desktop on it.
To get to the Extended Display and Monitor settings do the following:
- Right click on an empty space on your Desktop and choose Graphic Properties.
- Click Display > Multiple Displays.
- From here, either turn off extended display or set it the way it’s supposed to be.
You should now be able to see all your programs running on the screen in front of you!
