Call Of Duty 2022 is A Sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare And Will Come With A “New Warzone Experience”

In a recent blog post pertaining to the recent updates released for Call Of Duty: Vanguard and Warzone, the COD staff also went over their plans for the future of the series. In particular, they revealed a few key details about the next two big Call Of Duty things coming in 2022. One is, of course, the new mainline entry in the yearly COD releases, but the second hints at a potential sequel to COD’s standalone Battle Royale experience, Warzone.

Modern Warfare (2?)

As you can see in the picture above, we get confirmation that this year’s Call Of Duty is a direct sequel to COD: Modern Warfare (2019), the game that arguably reinvigorated the franchise from stagnation. There’s rumors indicating that the new game will focus on Columbian drug cartels but we can’t be sure this early in the cycle. Obviously, there’s no release date set for now but if previous releases are anything to go by, expect an announcement sometime in the following months with the game dropping in November of this year.

Warzone (2?)

Moreover, Activision is also working on a “new Warzone experience” in tandem with the new game as both are being developed by Infinity Ward. Call Of Duty games are massive productions so different studios work together to create a game but with one overarching studio at the helm, and this time that’s Infinity Ward. This is kind of a given considering Infinity Ward also made Modern Warfare 2019 and Warzone back then.

That being said, the wording “new Warzone experience” is interesting as it doesn’t explicitly state that a new Warzone game is in the works, rather a massive update of sorts, kind of like Fortnite going from Chapter 1 to Chapter 2. Activision says that the new Warzone will have an all-newplayspace” and sandbox mode, akin to Battlefield, but no details are known at the moment.

The biggest takeaway here is the mention of a new engine. Call Of Duty 2022 is being built on a new engine and so is the new Warzone which means that Warzone will most likely still remain the same game but will be ported over to a new engine with loads of new mechanics, modes, and a new style. Also similar to how Epic Games moved Fortnite from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 last year.

Popular COD YouTuber JackFrags reported that the new Warzone will have “significant improvements” over the current one with no one match playing the same as the previous one. Adding on that this new Warzone experience won’t be the “same old, same old“. This is further backed up by Infinity Ward’s Pat Kelly‘s quote regarding Warzone that she gave to CharlieIntel:

All of this new comes in light of Microsoft’s recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard which raised doubts on the multi-platform future of Call Of Duty. Xbox CEO Phil Spencer has said that so far Call Of Duty has a multi-platform foreseeable future with partners over at PlayStation being at peace with Xbox and Activision Blizzard. However, there’s no saying if this will stay true in the coming years, but we can at least be sure that this year’s COD releases will be multi-platform.

On top of this, Activision Blizzard has been engrossed with seemingly never-ending allegations of workplace harassment and employee mistreatment. The company has even worked towards discouraging unionization and protests that have taken place at Raven Software, a studio that has worked on every single Call Of Duty title since 2010. It remains to be seen how the Call Of Duty franchise would be potentially affected in wake of these recent events.
