Borderlands 3 Ditches Slag For New “Nuclear Radiation” Effect

Borderlands 3 was announced a few weeks ago, and fans have gotten busy at speculating all the new features. Per a leaked advertisement of the game, we know that Radiation is going to be a new elemental effect. As it turns out, this new element will take the place of the slag element.

Slag, an elemental effect first introduced in Borderlands 2, will not be a part of Borderlands 3. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford shared the news alongside a teaser for a “nuclear radiation” effect.

“There is no slag – we replaced it with something that actually makes a little sense,” says Pitchford. “The new “element” damage type, which is like a nuclear radiation effect, has a similar effect to slag (increased vulnerability by those affected) and also has a damage-over-time component.”

Slag in the Borderlands series is an element produced as a by-product of Eridium refinement. Slag elemental weapons have a chance to coat targets in a layer of slag. Slagged targets are easily identified by their bright purple color coating, and receive increased damage from all non-slag sources.

Judging from Pitchford’s explanation, it looks like that radiation is an upgraded version of slag. Not only does it increase damage taken, but it also deals damage over a period of time. Pitchford says that the slag element was dropped in favor of radiation because it seemed more logical.

As Borderlands 3 will feature a massive explorable environment not limited to Pandora, it wouldn’t really make sense for slag to be everywhere. Radiation, however, is a more reasonable effect that is also fitting for nearly every environment.

Ahead of the Borderlands 3 gameplay reveal on May 1st, we know a lot about what the game has to offer. The new Vault Hunters and their abilities have been revealed, and we’ll very soon know about the new vehicles and weapons.

Borderlands 3 launches on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC via Epic Store on September 13th. Additionally, you can pre-order the game to cash in on some exclusive bonuses such as the gold weapon skins pack.

  1. so they made slag the same as it is in reborn. Damage Resistance Debuff plus a DoT. nice. I just wonder if it will be as integral to end game as it was in BL2.
