Borderlands 3 launched on 13th September, and the game is already settings new records for the franchise. While everyone has varying opinions about the title, one thing that’s for sure is that a ton of people are playing it. According to Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, Borderlands 3’s player count is almost twice when compared to the all time peak concurrent players of the second game in the series.
“Fun Fact: On PC, the data is that the launch day peak concurrent players of Borderlands 3 is about *twice-as-high* as the all time peak concurrent players of Borderlands 2,” tweets Pitchford. “WOW! You guys are great!”
To put the into numbers, Borderlands 2’s Steam Charts page indicates an all-time peak of 123,596 players. These statistics are PC only, and Borderlands 3 isn’t even out on Steam yet. Going on Pitchford’s claims, the newly released title is apparently seeing approximately a quarter million concurrent players. That’s a lot of players.
As the game is a six-month timed Epic Store exclusive, expect the player count to boom once the game eventually releases on Steam. Borderlands is and has been one of the most popular action RPG series on PC. Seven years after its release, Borderlands 2 is still maintaining an impressive active player count of over 10,000.
When Gearbox first announced Borderlands 3’s exclusivity to the Epic Store, they received a lot of backlash. Many fans organized a boycott, stating that they would refuse to purchase the game via the newborn store. However, Pitchford’s statement basically confirms that the effects of the “boycott” were insignificant, and that Borderlands 3 is one of 2019’s most popular games.
Despite the complaints from the community regarding bugs, I’d say Borderlands 3 is having a fairly successful launch. Gearbox is also running Golden Key SHiFT code tests, and there’s one scheduled for today. If you want a chance to obtain some good loot, follow these instructions.
