Bandai Namco is Starting Work on its Most Expensive Project Ever

Bandai Namco is a Japanese video game company known for releasing popular games such as Tekken, Dark Souls, Soul Calibur, and many more. Katsuhiro Harada, the general manager of the studio, announced that he is leading development on a new project that will supposedly have the highest budget out of any in the company’s history. Whilst Harada is best known for his work as a producer and director of Tekken games, it seems that this next title will not be part of the fighting genre.

During the Piro Live! New Year’s Eve Special 2021 (via Gematsu), Harada discussed the upcoming Bandai Namco project and gave us a glimpse of what to expect.

“Well, honestly I think this might be the most costly development project in Bandai Namco history. I think its incredible that the higher-ups approved of this. Well, the approval has passed, its just that due to the coronavirus, we haven’t really been able to properly start the project.”

Harada’s surprise at the fact that his costly project was approved leads us to believe that the new project will be different from Bandai Namco’s usual titles. Over the years, the Tokyo-based studio has had lots of success with big titles such as Dark Souls, Soul Calibur, and Tekken. As Bandai Namco expands its territory by taking on new projects like the upcoming action role-playing game Elden Ring, it is fair to say that we can expect big things from the studio in the future.

Harada also notes that he’s “developing things other than fighting games. I don’t think I’ll ever do any other fighting game other than Tekken. But I won’t say what this project is at this point.” Aside from Tekken, Harada previously worked on several Pokemon and Pokken Tournament titles a few years back.

It will be interesting to see how Bandai Namco’s most expensive project ever turns out. However, it will be a long while before we receive some significant news about the new title.
