Atari Unveils Atari 2600+: A Modern Console to Play Retro Games

Atari and Plaion have unveiled a modern iteration of Atari’s most popular home console, the Atari 2600. It’s called the Atari 2600+ (Atari 2600 Plus). Atari 2600+ is a blend of old and new, allowing you to enjoy your favorite Atari 2600 and 7800 games all in one place. Plus, it’s designed to work easily with modern TVs through HDMI connectivity.

The Atari 2600+ comes with a CX40+ joystick and a 10-in-1 game cartridge, allowing you to play iconic games such as Adventure, Missile Command, Yars’ Revenge, Combat, Dodge ‘Em, Haunted House, Maze Craze, RealSports Volleyball, Surround, and Video Pinball for a nostalgic gaming experience.

What makes the Atari 2600+ different from its predecessor? Here’s what’s new:

  • Dual Cartridge Compatibility: The Atari 2600+ supports both Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges, giving you a wider selection of games to play. See the full compatibility list here.
  • HDMI Output for Modern TVs: No more dealing with old connection methods. The Atari 2600+ has an HDMI output that connects easily to modern TVs.
  • Widescreen Mode: To enjoy a broader view of the iconic games, it supports the widescreen mode. It adapts classic games to modern screen dimensions without changing the original gameplay.
  • Enhanced Cartridge Socket: The larger cartridge socket prevents cartridges from getting stuck during gameplay.
  • Light-up Atari Logo: The classic Atari logo lights up while you play, adding a nice touch to your gaming experience.

The hardware includes a Rockchip 3128 SOC microprocessor, 256MB DDR3 RAM, and 256MB eMMC fixed internal storage.

You can pre-order the Atari 2600+ now for $129.99, and it’s expected to start shipping in November 2023. The complete package contains the wired CX40+ Joystick with a serial port connector, along with important accessories like an HDMI cable and a USB-C power cable.
