ASUS To Launch Refreshed ROG Strix Laptops With AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080, and 2K 165Hz Screen At CES 2021

ASUS teased a new version of its ROG Strix gaming laptops. The company has indicated it will launch new and refreshed editions of its popular ROG Strix Gaming Laptops at CES 2021. These powerful, mobile computing and gaming computers will have the new AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX CPU, and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 discrete GPU.

ASUS ROG Strix laptops will get a 2021 refresh with the recently launched processor options from AMD, and graphics chips from NVIDIA. The company will not only refresh its lineup with NVIDIA Ampere-based GeForce RTX 30 graphics cards but also offer Ryzen-based Strix systems for the first time.

Gaming Laptops With Powerful AMD CPUs and NVIDIA Ampere-Based 3000 Series GPUs Arriving Earlier Than Intel-Based Portable Computers:

ASUS merely offered basic information about the upcoming ROG Strix gaming laptops. However, the Chinese website ITHome appears to have more information on the new ROG Strix series.

According to the website, the ASUS ROG Strix 2021 laptops will be offered with up to Ryzen 9 5900HX CPU. The name of the CPU is slightly different from the mainstream AMD Ryzen 9 5900H. Although ASUS will have the ZEN 3-based top-end CPU, it is quite likely that the company has secured a special edition of the processor, which could be factory-unlocked and optimized for gaming.

As for the graphics, the new ASUS ROG Strix 2021 laptops will have a choice of premium discrete GPUs from NVIDIA’s Ampere-based GeForce RTX 3000 Series. The new laptop series will be offered with GeForce RTX 3060, RTX 3070, and RTX 3080 graphics cards.

In addition to the powerful AMD CPU and NVIDIA dGPU, the ASUS ROG Strix 2021 laptops will have a 2K (2560×1440) screen with a refresh rate of up to 165 Hz. There has been an intense debate pitting high-pixel-density and image quality 4K screens which are locked to 60 Hz, against 1080p screens offered with up to 300 Hz refresh rate. As a compromise, the 2K display offers decently high pixel density and supports a higher refresh rate for a smooth gaming experience.

ASUS Had No Option But To Include AMD Ryzen 5000 Series of CPUs In The ROG Strix 2021 Laptops?

Needless to add, this will be the first time the high-end NVIDIA GPUs will be paired with high-end AMD CPUs. Hence buyers will have one of the most interesting lineups from ASUS. However, it seems the company didn’t have much choice.

According to persistent reports, Intel will not launch its Tiger Lake-H 8-core CPUs. These powerful CPUs were in direct competition to the ZEN 3-based AMD Ryzen Cezanne-H lineup. The company is expected to launch these new CPUs a few months later.

Intel, does, however, have a few variants of Tiger Lake-H35, a 4 Core, and 8 Thread CPU for a few laptops. Needless to add, these laptops would not be a very attractive choice for gamers or even enthusiasts. Understanding Intel’s limitations, at least at CES 2021, the majority of laptop manufacturers will still offer premium 10th Gen Comet Lake-H CPUs with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3000 dGPUs.
