Apex Legends season 4 launches tomorrow on the battle royale’s one year anniversary. In addition to a wave of new content and cosmetics, developer Respawn is changing up the World’s Edge map. As seen in the Assimilation gameplay trailer, a Planet Harvester has resulted in devastation across the entire map.
World’s Edge is Apex Legends’ second map which replaced King’s Canyon when it launched in season 3. The new season heavily ties into the game’s lore, featuring Hammond Robotics as a sinister megacorp. The company has installed a Planet Harvester in Capitol City, which has resulted in “giant lava-filled faults” and the area splitting in two.
“We essentially split this area into two separate zones for players to land in and loot: Fragment East and Fragment West,” writes EA. “The large fissure can only be crossed in two locations (a zipline, or a fallen skyscraper bridge). This allows teams some breathing room to control one side after the drop, reducing the risk of running into 3rd parties from the other side of the city.”
Furthermore, the area now has a new gameplay mechanic called the Updraft. Now, players who fall into the fissure will be slowly pushed back up, but not without punishment. Entering the fissure will inflict 25 damage, and players are very vulnerable when traveling through the updraft. “You are essentially a flying loot piñata for any nearby enemy players.”
In addition to changes, a new location called the Survey Camp has been added to World’s Edge. Located between the Epicenter and Skyhook, this area was designed to “relieve the pressure” from nearby high-traffic locations.
Weapon racks are a new gameplay feature designed to give players incentives to visit smaller buildings. These new racks can be found in the survey camp and are guaranteed to contain weapons.
Apex Legends season 4 Assimilation launches tomorrow on February 4th.
