Amazon Games’ Decline Continues Following the Departure of Another Executive from the Company

Amazon Games suffers yet another setback as another veteran executive has decided to leave the company. John Smedley has been in the industry for over thirty years and has been in charge of Amazon Game Studios’ San Diego office since 2017. He has since worked on a number of projects, none of which have seen the light of day.

As far as his time in the industry is concerned, Smedley began his career in the industry by launching a software development company in the early 1990s. After gaining experience there, he went on to work for Sony. He was given the responsibility of overseeing the development of an online role-playing video game by Sony Interactive Studios America in the year 1996.

Later, Sony Online Entertainment would rebrand the company as 989 Studios and release the game as the massively multiplayer online role-playing game EverQuest. During Smedley’s tenure at Sony Online Entertainment, which lasted until 2015, the company released hundreds of titles such as Star Wars Galaxies, The Matrix Online, and DC Universe Online. From there, he went on to work at Amazon for the next six years.

John does not specify the reasons for his departure from Amazon but claims that they had nothing to do with the company. According to him, he simply wanted to expand his horizons and try out new things. “After a lot of thought, I’ve decided it’s time for me to try my hand at something new,” he said. His resignation, however, is intriguing because it occurred about the same time that the studio head, Mike Frazzini, also departed the company and several other employees were laid off.

Andrew Sites, principal publishing producer at Amazon Games, will replace Smedley as head of the San Diego studio. Sites and Smedley have also previously worked together at Sony. According to Andrew:

John is a game industry legend, and we’re grateful for his contributions to Amazon Games over the past six years. His team remains focused on bringing their unannounced project to life. John is committed to staying on until the team is fully transitioned before he moves on to pursue something new.”

It is time for Amazon Games to conduct an internal assessment, as the development studio has been in operation for some time, but it is unable to offer games, especially popular ones. With the departure of yet another significant team member, the time may have come to take this step.

Let us know in the comments what you think of this, and how can Amazon jump back from the current state it is in right now.
